Lecturer in Criminology, Department of Social Work

RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Teach, supervise and assess at both undergraduate and postgraduate level;
- Supervise master’s degree students;
- Initiate and sustain research at a nationally competitive level;
- Develop and organise under-graduate curricula/modules;
- Academic administration and other duties as determined by the Head of Department;
- Involvement in faculty committees and initiatives;
- Participation in the Department’s strategic initiatives relating to teaching, research and community engagement.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

- A Master’s degree in Criminology;
- Appropriate teaching experience in the applicable field of expertise;
- Supervision of postgraduate students;
- Research outputs appropriate to the post level and/or applicable field of experience.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

- Knowledge of fundamental Criminology;
- Knowledge of theories of crime;
- Applied knowledge in crime prevention and control in South Africa.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES

The following will be a strong recommendation:

- A doctoral degree in Criminology;
- A proven research and publishing record of accomplishment in the specialised field;
- Appropriate language and communication skills.

For appointment to be confirmed following probation:
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
