**The Role**:
The primary role is to deliver the category business plan, ensure it achieves its objectives and ensure the correct assortment at the right price. In this role, you will be required to market product categories effectively, negotiate promotional strategies with suppliers, update internal reports, perform regular retail checks, and drive sales through different planogram strategies.
The Category Manager needs to pinpoint customer trends and understand the advanced principles of category management. As a top-notch category manager you need to be persuasive, sales-driven, and goal-oriented. Relationships with vendors and product range management will also be part of your duties.
Management/supervisory experience in a similar role, in a C-Store environment or small store format (FMCG Groceries) is essential. The incumbent must be able to fit into a start-up environment and be willing to grow with the brand as it establishes itself in the South African market.
**Responsibilities**:
- Ensure company product categories along with displays are optimised for sales and marketing
- Research and analyse trends in sales and consumer behaviour
- Draft reports for the organization to enhance sales
- Produce, adapt and advise on display and current marketing materials
- Plan and implement planograms for shelf displays
- Communicate with suppliers and retailers about products
- Optimise in-store displays with prompted signage
- Adjust strategies and materials to improve sales with new target markets
- Coordinate and brief market research initiatives
- Check and manage inventory for various product categories
- Analyse data or insights to determine industry and consumer trends
- Develop exit strategies for unsuccessful products
- Foster trust relationships with vendors to achieve better pricing and quality of services
- Place appropriate orders to ensure product availability that meets consumer demands
- Determine the positioning of a product category to maximise visibility
- Liaise with marketing teams to determine competitive pricing and promotional activities of a product category
- Make forecasts for product demand to ensure the sustainability of inventory
- Assume responsibility of budget development and revenue for category
- Determine the annual unit and GP growth
- Maintain project schedules
- Increase sales revenues
- Perform all duties in accordance with company policy and procedure
- Reasonable ad hoc duties as requested by Management
**Minimum Requirements**:
Matric or equivalent
Relevant qualification (retail / business management / procurement / marketing)
Experience in retail (FMCG Groceries) and marketing in a C-store, 3-5 years essential
Experience as a category manager or buyer, 3-5 years essential
Experience in small store format merchandising
Solid knowledge of category management, marketing and sales principles
Understanding of data analysis and forecasting methods
An excellent grasp of spatial, design, and promotional planning
Up to date with the latest category management principles
Proficient at evaluating current business retail practices
Understanding of market activity
Negotiation and interpersonal skills
Price book management
Proficient in MS Office
Working knowledge of related software
