Safety Officer

Our client is looking for a Safety Officer to join their team.
- Translating the operational strategic plan into a business plan (including meeting of statutory and ISO objectives) in consultation with the Company
- Ensuring the delegation of objectives to SHEQ personnel within a control framework to ensure that objectives are continuously monitored, achieved and reported upon
- Taking appropriate action when it becomes evident that operational objectives may not be achieved and providing advice and action plans on how the situation could be rectified
- Keeping the Company informed regarding progress with the achievement of SHEQ objectives
- Continuous improvement regarding SHEQ issues
- Elimination of fatalities and reportable incidents
- Accurate reporting information on a regular basis as required by the Company and statutory entities
- Highlighting of sub-standard performance, processes and systems
- SHEQ employees understanding their roles and being managed in a manner as to perform to the requirements of their roles
- SHEQ equipment being supplied, used and maintained in a manner supportive of the achievement of operational objectives
- Provide a quality service and document control service to the Company
- Ensure the implementation of environmental policies and practices
- Ensure compliance with relevant environmental legislation
- Coordinate all aspects of pollution control, waste management, recycling and environmental health
- Conduct site inspections, monitoring and enforcing implementation of the EMP and AEL commitments
- Ensure implementation of and compliance with client’s authorisations and permits conditions
- Implement a monitoring programme for water, waste, energy usage
- Train staff at all levels on environmental issues and responsibilities
- Conduct risk assessments as required
- Ensure that incidents and accidents are properly reported, recorded and investigated
- Compile and submit monthly reports
- Implement and maintain environmental systems
- Conduct awareness training on safe work procedures
- Implement the VDM Risk Management framework (Baseline Risk Assessment developed and signed off, Significant Risks identified, Controls implemented and audited)
- Implement a program to conduct Issue Based Risk Assessments and updating or development of Standard Operating Procedures for issues as identified from the Baseline Assessment
- Ensure that Training material is updated with current Code of Practises, SOP’s and managerial instructions and conduct scheduled audits to assess compliance thereto
- Inspect all working places and machinery within the following periods: ¬ At least once in fifteen days (High Risk working places), At least once in thirty days (Medium Risk Working places) and At least once in ninety days (Low Risk Working Places)
- Records results of Inspections and other monitoring activities for development of risk profiles per working places
- Monitor and Audit Contractor and site wide processes/sections/departments compliance to Mine SHEC System requirements (OHSAS 18001, ISO 9001)
- Implement the required corrective measures and provide effective coaching to ensure improved compliance to SHEQ System requirements
- Analyse leading and lagging indicator information to determine trends and advise line supervisors and management accordingly
- Facilitate Risk Assessments
- Implement and maintain a system to report and investigate incidents to determine root causes and appropriate remedial measures
- Attend Pre-shift meetings and conduct odd shifts
- Monitor compliance to emergency preparedness procedures
- Support health and safety representatives in their duties and ensure that Monthly Site Committee meetings are conducted
- Ensure that all contractors’ packs are updated and compliant before accessing compliance
- Ensure that First Aiders are trained and appointed for all shifts
- Implement Housekeeping and Behaviour Based Safety as building blocks for the Company
- Compilation of reports to provide management with accurate information for future risk control
