CURATOR: CULTURE COLLECTION - 12 MONTH CONTRACT

An opportunity for a researcher / junior researcher to support the daily operation of the culture collections (CMW, CMW-IA) at FABI at the University of Pretoria is available. The CMW was established in 1985 and houses more than 60,000 fungal strains related to plant health. The CMW is closed to the public but crucially important to FABI researchers and their collaborators. The CMW-IA is an open collection registered with the WFCC (World Federation of Culture Collection) and a member of the Biodiversity Biobanks South Africa (BBSA) Consortium. Both collections play a vital role in national and international research dealing with plant diseases and fungal pathogens which threaten our forests and crops.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will be responsible for the following but not limited to:

- Taking responsibility for the management of in vitro fungal and bacterial strains and supporting infrastructure;
- Developing and managing the database of the collections;
- Liaising with internal and external stakeholders with regard to the movement of strains;
- Administering Material Transfer Agreements and Permits;
- Managing the release of strains from collections to industry, the public and researchers;
- Coordinating deposits and requests of microbial strains or herbarium specimens with international collections and herbaria;
- Coordinate membership and involvement to the WFCC and BBSA;
- Contribute and provide support to research projects at FABI;
- Managing subordinates (culture collection technical assistants);
- Contributing and providing support to research projects.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

- MSc in Agronomy, Microbiology, Plant Pathology, Entomology and Soil Science, or any other related field;
- A minimum of 2 years proven experience in the following:

- DNA isolation, PCR and sequencing
- Fungal isolations and preservations;
- Fungal identifications;
- Microscope observations.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

- Genetics, molecular biology and microbiology;
- Appropriate language and communication skills;
- Good interpersonal skills;
- Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team;
- Efficient planning, organising and prioritising skills;
- Ability to work under pressure;
- Ethical insight and reliability;
- Professionalism;
- Flexibility and adaptability.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

- PhD in Agronomy, Microbiology, Plant Pathology, Entomology and Soil Science, or any other related field;
- A minimum of 2 years proven experience in the following:

- Managing microbial collection;
- Database management;
