**Occupational Health and Safety Officer in the Engineering and Industrial Sector**

Position Title: Occupational Health and Safety Officer

**Purpose of the Role**:
To ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSH Act) and related legislation in South Africa within an engineering and industrial environment. The role requires proactive management of workplace hazards, implementation of safety systems, and promotion of a safe working culture to protect employees, contractors, and visitors.

**Key Responsibilities**:
**1. Safety Compliance and Auditing**:

- Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (85 of 1993) and other relevant regulations.
- Conduct regular workplace inspections and audits to identify hazards and risks.
- Develop and implement corrective and preventative actions to address non-compliance and mitigate risks.

**2. Risk Management**:

- Perform risk assessments and develop Safe Work Procedures (SWPs).
- Oversee the implementation of health and safety management systems tailored to engineering and industrial environments.
- Monitor adherence to safety protocols, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

**3. Incident Management**:

- Investigate workplace incidents and accidents, documenting findings and recommending measures to prevent recurrence.
- Maintain incident records and ensure timely reporting to relevant authorities when necessary.

**4. Training and Awareness**:

- Develop and conduct safety training programs for employees, contractors, and visitors.
- Facilitate toolbox talks and safety awareness campaigns.
- Educate staff on emergency procedures and ensure preparedness for potential scenarios.

**5. Policy Development and Implementation**:

- Develop and enforce occupational health and safety policies, aligned with organizational goals and legal requirements.
- Regularly review and update policies to reflect changes in legislation or industry standards.

**6. Stakeholder Engagement**:

- Liaise with regulatory bodies, such as the Department of Labour, to ensure compliance and resolve issues.
- Collaborate with management and staff to foster a culture of safety.

**7. Monitoring and Reporting**:

- Maintain accurate records of safety activities, inspections, and audits.
- Provide detailed reports to management on safety performance, including trends and improvement recommendations.

**Qualifications and Skills**:
**Educational Requirements**:
Certification as a Safety Officer (e.g., SAMTRAC, NEBOSH) is compulsary

**Experience**:

- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in an occupational health and safety role, preferably within the engineering or industrial sector.
- Proven track record of managing safety in environments with heavy machinery, construction, or manufacturing processes.

**Skills and Competencies**:

- In-depth knowledge of the OSH Act and relevant South African regulations.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for risk assessment and incident investigation.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with diverse teams.
- Competency in MS Office Suite and safety management software.
- Ability to handle high-pressure environments and manage multiple priorities.

**Other Requirements**:

- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to various sites.
- Medically fit to work in an industrial setting.

**Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)**:

- Reduction in workplace incidents and near-misses.
- Compliance with audit findings and regulatory inspections.
- Timely delivery of safety training and implementation of safety initiatives.
- Employee and contractor engagement in safety programs.

This role is critical to ensuring that engineering and industrial operations meet high safety standards, fostering a secure and productive working environment.

Pay: R20 000,00 - R25 000,00 per month
