Electrical Assistant

**SUMMARY OF POSITION**
**Power Connect Systems **experienced “electrical assistant” means an employee who is engaged in any or all the following tasks.
**ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
**Electrical Installations**
- Have a basic understanding and ability to read building plans to understand electrical circuits
- Inspects (visually) plug and light circuits and inspection boxes
- Assist with fixing plug and light circuits
- Work with various electrical equipment and hand tools
- Assist with installing safety and distribution components (e.g. socket switches, circuit-breaker panels and distribution panels etc.)
- Prepare and assemble conduits and connect wiring through them
- Test electrical circuits for continuity in electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures, using testing devices such as plugtesters and multimeter to ensure safety of the system
- Prepare hand sketches to show the location of wiring and equipment and to ensure conformance to regulations (marking of cable and sketching of plans)
- Assist with electrical maintenance to ensure proper usage.
- Assisting with erecting and connecting luminaires
- Assisting a master installation electrician, an installation electrician, an electrical tester for single-phase, an electrician, an artisan, a domestic appliance mechanic, a domestic appliance repairer and an Elconop 1, Elconop 2 or Elconop 3, but not performing any work individually except as set out above
- Stripping redundant installations and equipment incidental thereto from which the supply cables have been removed.
- Installing and fixing of flush and surface mounted wireways and ancillary equipment thereto.
- Installing cables including the fitting of glands, making off and securing such cables, but excluding the connection thereof.
- Assisting with operating a trenching machine once trained.
- Cleaning office, client premises and workshop areas after work is completed.
**Routing**
- Measure and cut trunking or skirting with a set square
- Cut and install power skirting, trunking and conduit
- Digging holes and trenches, planting poles and laying cables in trenches.
- Assisting with operating a trenching machine once trained
- Chasing and cutting walls and concrete floors for conduit.
**Compliance**
- Adhering to all safety and performance standards.
**Data Installations**
- **Installing Cables**:
- Identification of suitable cable routes on site (Planning)
- Accurate measurement of routes. (Limited cable wastage)
- Understand the plan as communicated by Team Leader (Vision)
- Understanding fibre optic cables, and the practises of correctly installing fibre optic cable. (Bend radius & figure 8)
- Cables marked and labelled correctly before they are installed.
- **Network Points**:
- Numbering and layout of network points is done logically.
- **Cable Routing**:
- Investigate cable routing on site (Reticulation)
- Measure cable routes
- Test to Level 1 specification
- **Looming and Lacing**:
- Basic understanding of the cable markings on the cable and their meaning. Copper & Fibre
- Cable looms are measured and cut accurately before they are installed.
- Lacing of looms on trays and in ceiling boards are done correctly.
- Spacing and tension of straps on looms are correct.
- Exposed cable looms on Wall Mount Cable Trays are correctly laced.
- Correctly lace and loom the Cabinet to the Patch Panel.
- **Skirting and Trunking**:
- Correct selection and use of hand tools. Measure and cut with hacksaw. Use of Set Square. Spirit level
- Neatness and cleanliness of finished installation. Filling and touch up where required. Installation wiped clean.
- **Terminations**:
- Clear understanding and identification of A & B Spec.
- Correct termination of wall outlets. Understanding the implications of incorrect termination practises.
- Cable skin distance, maintaining twists in pairs, cable pair nicks.
- Correct mounting of wall outlets. Use the correct fastening material for the surface you are mounting on.
- Wall Mount Cabinets are mounted securely and level.
- **Basic Testing and Fault Finding**:
- Basic tester reading, understanding the display. Identify a fault condition on the tester.
- Able to test installations to Level 1 specifications, basic wire map and length.
- Use of markings on the cable to locate faults.
**Additional Duties**
- Good communication skills
- Resolves issues quickly and efficiently.
- Willingness to work after hours at short notice.
- Willingness to work after hours, weekends and on public holidays.
- Willingness to travel to other provinces for new installations and or maintenance.
- Loading or unloading materials.
- Learning to manage of materials.
- The installation environment is always kept as clean and tidy as possible (Respect the clients premises). Attention to detail and neatness of both new installations and maintenance.
- The Company's property, tools and equipment is safeguarded at all times.
- General care and maintainance of PPE kit
