**WHAT WILL YOU DO**
- Manage the Santam Client Solutions (SCS) Commercial business to ensure achievement of profitable growth targets and create, develop and grow a world class underwriting team in support of the Santam’s strategic objective to grow the Small Business Insurance market through multiple distribution channels within both SCS and Santam Broker Solutions (SBS).**WHAT WILL MAKE YOU SUCCESSFUL IN THE ROLE?**
- Product Development and Management- o Design SME Commercial insurance covers in partnership with Product management that meet the needs of consumers of Commercial businesses and behave in the way customers expect it to behave.
- Create and maintain underwriting rules for these covers and offerings and design how they must be applied and executed to facilitate the ease of doing business with Santam and aligned to risk appetite.
- Investigate, draft and maintain policy wordings, conditions and clauses as well as the rules surrounding these e.g. which are mandatory and which are applicable in certain circumstances etc.
- Collaborate with Actuarial to determine rating parameters for all Commercial sections, rating rules and execution thereof.
- Ensures actuarial rating parameters are aligned with actual experience of the risks, especially where there is no loss history on which to base rating.
- Ensures rating parameters are correctly executed within Santam SBS, and that a delegation of underwriting authority exists to allow for flexibility within Santam’s profit and growth targets.
- Keep abreast of global developments on the underwriting of SME Commercial risks and determine whether risks need to be reviewed and possibly reduced, or whether there are opportunities to innovate for the South African market.
- Come up with new solutions and innovations that allow Santam to remain the market leader in SME insurance.
- Engage with other expert underwriters in the Santam Group to ensure optimal client & broker solutions.- Profit and Growth- o Ensure the attractiveness of the offerings we create to enable SBS to compete effectively in the market we operate in, ensuring that our covers and pricing are market-related and achieve our required rate of return.
- Drive and manage the consistent achievement of SCS’s overall Commercial profitable growth targets (which may at times require compromise on one class of business to balance broader profitability).
- Ensure adherence to a National Survey Policy, aligned to the Santam Board’s Risk Appetite, which determines which risks need to be surveyed at what stage of the policy lifecycle (e.g. prior to quote, prior to issuance, post issuance etc.) and at what intervals (e.g. annually or every 3 or 5 years).
- Make underwriting decisions that balances logic with relationships (particularly on risk reduction requirements).
- Understand profit and growth challenges and determine solutions to achieve underwriting profit (pricing, discounting, underwriting processes, segmentation & risk models).
- Meet with National and large Brokers to discuss complex underwriting issues and get their buy-in for the required underwriting actions and decisions.- Underwriting Governance- Sign off technical policy and clause wording, underwriting manuals, rules and mandates.
- Design operational processes for reinsurance placements.
- Govern and report on compliance with Underwriting Guidelines.
- Understand the impact of reinsurance programmes on business & discuss more adequate & efficient structures (optimum reinsurance & pooling solutions) with Santam Reinsurance department.
- Work with Head of underwriting governance to assist with governance of the SCS portfolio as needed.- Represent Santam at industry forums and working groups related to the class of business specialisation e.g. SAIA Fire Committee, FPASA Board etc.
- Engage with and influence industry stakeholders such as the Fire Protection Association of SA, Automated Sprinkler Inspection Bureau, Local Authorities etc. because of Santam’s dependency from a business perspective on the services provided by these stakeholders.
- Create and build an effective Commercial Underwriting team which provides consistent service delivery.
- Develop and build specialist technical underwriting skills within the Underwriting team to ensure a continuous supply of specialists to handle the growth in the SME business segments.
- Manage talent and ensure succession for critical roles to sustain Santam’s technical expertise and market leadership in Commercial Insurance.
- Motivate and inspire staff to manage employee turnover and compete effectively in the war for talent.
- QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE- Bachelor’s degree or relevant insurance related diploma: AIISA or FIISA or similar.
- Management or Leadership qualification is preferable.
- Must qualify for Santam’s Underwriting Level 1.
