Commercial Underwriter

Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, risk management, or a related field.
- Certified as a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter or Associate in Commercial Underwriter.
- A working knowledge of insurance services regulations, including the Investment Adviser's Act.
- Outstanding mathematical and analytical thinking skills.
- Excellent understanding of insurance structuring and reinsurance.
- Great analytical and comprehension skills.
- Good knowledge of financial analysis and document management software, such as Oracle and M-Files.
- Strong decision-making skills.
- Time management skills and ability to prioritize.
- Great communication skills.
- Working closely with the sales and brokerage departments to obtain relevant documentation from clients.
- Ensuring that all relevant personal information on the client is captured accurately.
- Identifying potential risks that can cost the company money.
- Working closely with the actuarial department to design alternative insurance options for clients.
- Reporting to management on potential losses and excessive risks.
- Assisting brokers and sales staff with all underwriting-related queries.
- Providing specialized quotes to brokers.
- Investigate a client’s financial history
- Use relevant underwriting software
- Evaluate the software’s recommendation and offer their own recommendation
- Create summary reports for clients and upper management
- Develop comprehensive payment schedules and insurance agreements for clients
- Identify and inform management of potential risks of insuring the client
- Review insurance proposals and seek to improve terms
- Properly Assess and analyze client's background information
- Participate in continuing education courses to remain knowledgeable and competitive in the industry
- Use professional techniques and strategies to calculate the risk associated with client policies
- Review insurance claims and terms to determine the amount to be paid out by the company
- Designate and prepare insurance premiums based upon informed judgment and competitor pricing
- Organize meetings with specialists to help determine risk assessment in unique circumstances
