**Main purpose of the job**:

- To advise on, conduct, and contribute to research study design, protocol development, analysis, and publications pertaining to the social determinants of health, the incidence of vaccine-preventable diseases, and wastewater levels of vaccine-preventable diseases under surveillance by NICD in Gauteng Province

**Location**:

- **Gauteng City-Region Observatory, Braamfontein - Johannesburg**

**Key performance areas**:

- To work with GCRO, NICD, and Wits School of Public Health to conceptualize and draft proposals for the investigation of relationships between the incidence and prevalence of communicable diseases under surveillance by NICD (in wastewater and through clinical surveillance programs), health service delivery, and the health of populations resident in Gauteng Province and in specific wastewater catchment areas
- To obtain ethics approval from regulatory authorities for protocols under development, and to formulate and set in place data-sharing agreements between appropriate stakeholders
- To obtain appropriate data, conduct data cleaning, and manage data in accordance with protocols
- To conceptualize analyses and develop analysis plans, to identify training needs to support analyses, and to undergo appropriate training
- To report on findings internally and at academic meetings, conferences, and international meetings to appropriate stakeholders including academia, public health authorities, local, provincial and national government, and international interest groups
- To publish findings in peer-reviewed literature
- To collaborate closely with other investigators on related studies within GCRO and NICD and to provide advice or guidance on study design, protocol, research tools, data analysis, and other research-related activities
- Contribute towards the development of the research agenda by identifying relevant research questions, topics, and training needs

**Required minimum education and training**:

- **Master of Public Health qualification in Field Epidemiology or Master of Science in Biostatistics or related field**

**Required minimum work experience**:

- **Previous work experience in a research/educational or corporate institution**

**Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities**:

- Research in the epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2
- Experience in managing and analyzing datasets
- Proven ability to self-manage in an environment with multiple stakeholders with competing objective
- Ability to code in R/Python/Stata
- Published paper/s in peer-reviewed academic journals
- Delivered oral presentations at conferences
