**5-year contract appointment**

**Minimum Requirements**:

- An additional management qualification would be an added advantage.
- An academic leader with a strong record of published research not less than 30 publications of which several must be international peer-reviewed journal articles
- Ten years of senior research leadership and people and business management experience of which 5 years should be on the Director or equivalent level, i.e., at the Associate professor or Professor level.
- Extensive fundraising and large-scale research project management.
- Good networking skills and experience in working with senior policy makers;
- Research interests and experience in working on the study of Africa;
- A sound grounding and competencies in either quantitative and/or qualitative methodologies and proposal writing.
- A track record of experience in conducting large-scale comparative studies.
- Skills in design and management of large budgets, according to relevant financial, human, and statutory requirements.
- Intellectual and personal integrity, imagination, and drive.
- The ability to lead multidisciplinary research teams.
- Ability to work well under pressure and deliver to tight deadlines; and
- Excellent computer literacy
- Fluency in more than one of the major languages spoken on the continent would be an additional commendation.

**Duties and Responsibilities**:

- Lead, provide strategic direction, and manage the research activities of AISA in the context of the HSRC’s mission and strategic goals;
- Ensure the impact and visibility of the institute, both domestically and internationally;
- Enhance the knowledge about Africa based on research by African and Africanist scholars;
- Collaborate with researchers on the African continent and elsewhere in the world;
- Build national, continental, and international research dissemination partnerships;
- Provide oversight, direction, and leadership for grant maintenance, renewal, and new grant acquisition;
- Coordinate the organisation and hosting of high-level research-based seminars/lectures on the study of Africa;
- Promote the communication of findings in high-impact peer-reviewed journals, and the production of policy briefs with HSRC staff; relevant clients, and stakeholders;
- Develop contacts and interact with appropriate policymakers on the African continent and elsewhere in the world;
- Support the overall process of management and organisational (i.e. corporate) decision-making to ensure that HSRC meets its mandate;
- Financial management for the Institute, including analysis, budgeting (operational & Capex), and reporting;
- Ensure adherence to and compliance with applicable legislation/regulations/HSRC policies, procedures, and expectations of other regulatory and funding agencies;
- Manage the media relations of the institute to preserve the integrity of the HSRC;
- Ensure adequate staffing of the institute, including ensuring that staff are supported, mentored and managed and that they act within the delegated authority parameters of the organisation; and
- Build and maintain high-performance teams and an appropriate culture within the area of responsibility to ensure the achievement of the institute and organisational targets.
