**Background**:
Over the past few years there has been a significant escalation in the illegal trade of succulents from South Africa’s arid zone which is threatening populations of many species of succulents.

WWF is assisting SANBI with capacity for the implementation of the recently formulated National Response Strategy and Action Plan to address the Illegal trade in South African Succulents. The Senior Scientific Coordinator role shall be providing leadership to all stakeholders involved in implementing the National Response Strategy and Action Plan, including monitoring the implementation progress of all actions in the strategy, sharing lessons between the different institutions on what methods are proving successful, and identifying priority actions that require resourcing.

**Minimum Requirements**:

- Minimum of MSc in environmental science, conservation, botany or biological sciences.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience, preferably in botanical sciences and/or illegal trade of wildlife products.
- Resilient character able to be responsive to the requirements of working with the complex rapidly evolving illegal trade in succulents.
- Ability to identify succulent plant species occurring in South Africa’s arid zone.
- Knowledge and understanding of the Succulent Karoo biome and South Africa’s arid zone, in particular endemic succulent flora.
- Experience working in the field and monitoring plant populations, ideally in arid environments.
- Self-managed individual with good planning and prioritizing skills to manage a varied and pressurized workload and deliver results.
- Independent thinking and working capabilities as well as the ability to engage across organisation and hierarchical levels.
- Stakeholder engagement and facilitation skills.
- Excellent presentation, interpersonal and communication, skills.
- Valid South African citizenship or resident status.

**Duties and Responsibilities**:
1. **Facilitate the implementation of the National Response Strategy and Action Plan to address the illegal trade in South African succulent flora**
- Assist in developing ToRs and establishing a multi-institutional succulent poaching response working group.
- Assist in facilitating the meeting of this working group on a regular basis.
- Track implementation of tasks outlined in the National Response Strategy and Action Plan through regular consultation with working group members.
- Identify and help further resource priority actions out of the National Response Strategy and Action Plan.
- Oversee the implementation of SANBIs priority actions out of the National Response Strategy and Action Plan.
- Track progress of objectives and actions in the National Response Strategy and Action Plan update as necessary.

2. **Lead in developing appropriate field monitoring protocols for priority succulent flora as part of implementing the National Response Strategy and Action Plan**
- Identify priority succulent species vulnerable to the impact of the illegal trade.
- Develop field monitoring schedule with associated target species and locations.
- Develop standardised field monitoring protocols for priority species.

3.** Undertake monitoring, analyses and conduct relevant research on priority succulent plant species**
- Implement monitoring for succulent plant populations.
- Analyse, capture and present results in formats that can be used for species Red Listing.
- Participate in the Arid Zone Ecological Forum annually.

4.** Provide support to enforcement efforts relating to the illegal trade in succulent flora**
- Develop templates for writing of statement for court cases (212 or 213 statements as appropriate).
- Co-ordinate a team of experts across South Africa to write 212 statements for the police.
