**Overview**:
Our client, a dynamic progressive artisan confectionary company is seeking to hire a food science intern. This position must prioritize timelines for new product development, evaluation of existing products, researching industry trends & new technology and supporting food safety standards. To participate in cross-functional product development activities resulting in meeting company goals for cost savings, quality improvements and new product innovations.

**Responsibilties & Duties**:

- Asisting the development of new products, managing the critical path from conceptualisation stage through to concept approval and to launch the product.
- Assisting the evaluation existing products in terms of texture, taste and formulation.
- Maintain knowledge of developments in ingredient formulation and food processing research.
- Assisting the food technologist in drafting and updating company on NPD procedures and ensuring that all staff are fully compliant
- Research on upcoming food trends and recommend ways to refine current product range.
- Understand and research on the relevant ingredients and how each ingredient that affects the stability and properties of the food.
- Gain knowledge on the regulatory compliance and quality assurance requirements and how to resolve regulatory compliance issues by (i) evaluating the nutritional value, colour, flavour and texture of food and (ii) test new ingredient concepts; work with purchasing to make ingredient modifications where appropriate.

**Education, experience and skills required**:

- Bachelors in food science/technology/ Commerce science or related field.
- At least 1 year food science/ food tech research experience in industry/academia.
- Experience in new product development is a plus.
- Proven track record of innovative research and development projects. A passion to create new products that meet consumer’s need.
- Ability to continuously challenge assumptions to seek innovative solutions and be enthusiastic in a fast paced environment.
- Strongly motivated and believes in the mission to bring red meat to market.
- Self-starter, energizing, results-oriented, and able to multi-task
- Must be forward-thinking.
- Ability to work independently as well as in a team
- Strong time-management and organizational skills.
- Demonstrate initiative and proactive approach
- Have great attention to detail and the ability to keep detailed written records.

**Job Type**: Internship
Contract length: 12 months

- Blackheath, Western Cape: Reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work (required)

- Bachelors (required)

- Microsoft Office: 3 years (preferred)
- Research and Development: 1 year (preferred)
- New Product Development: 1 year (preferred)
- Food Safety & Quality: 1 year (preferred)

**Language**:

- Afrikaans (preferred)

License/Certification:

- Drivers licence (required)
