**Job Advert Summary**:
The HSRC is committed to promoting environmental sustainability in all facets of society, including the democratic process. As such, the HSRC is embarking on a groundbreaking initiative to evaluate the environmental implications of different phases of the electoral cycle in South Africa. The aim of the project is to work with the HSRC and electoral stakeholders to identify ways of reducing the environmental footprints of electoral processes and activities for possible future experimentation, evaluation and implementation. In this initial phase of work, the project will focus on developing guidelines to help promote environmentally conscious elections in the country, and outline next steps for consideration and possible testing by the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC).

As the project-based Environmental Economist specializing in electoral practices, you'll spearhead comprehensive assessments to quantify the environmental impact of different voting systems, identify emerging pro-environmental electoral practices, and make recommendations for decreasing the carbon footprint of South African electoral activities in future.

**Minimum Requirements**:
**KEY REQUIREMENTS**:

- Advanced degree in Environmental Economics, Sustainability, or a related field.
- Proven experience in conducting environmental impact assessments and life cycle analyses.
- Familiarity with electoral processes and voting technologies is preferred.
- Strong analytical skills and proficiency in statistical software.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex concepts to diverse audiences.

**Duties and Responsibilities**:
**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**:
The scope of work and expectations of the Environmental Economist will include the following:

- Conducting rigorous environmental analyses to identify the impacts of aspects of the electoral cycle in South Africa.
- Collaborating with electoral authorities and stakeholders to gather data and insights on current voting practices.
- Developing innovative economic models to assess the costs and benefits of transitioning to more environmentally friendly electoral practices.
- Providing evidence-based recommendations and guidelines to policymakers and electoral management bodies on sustainable voting practices.
- Making suggestions of how best to engage with the public to raise awareness about the environmental implications of electoral systems.
- Communicating regularly and effectively with the project team.
