In delivering ‘social science that makes a difference’, the Research Programmes of the Human Sciences Research Council initiate and undertake policy-oriented research projects and programmes from its offices in Cape Town, Durban, Pietermaritzburg, and Pretoria. Its public-purpose mandate is set out in the Human Sciences Research Council Act of 2008.

The Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators (CeSTII) is a specialist research Centre within the Human Sciences Research Council that is dedicated to producing policy-relevant research and statistical analysis in the domain of science, technology and innovation, in the African context. CeSTII has a vision to be a thought and practice leader, as well as an acknowledged site of excellence in its field, and aims to consolidate its position as a value-adding component of South Africa’s national innovation system. CeSTII includes specialists in the area of science, technology and innovation measurement and policy, as well as economic development and other social science disciplines.

Over the past few years, CeSTII has established expertise in training African counterparts to implement research and experimental development (R&D) surveys. The CeSTII team has thus developed instruments, training materials and other useful resources. CeSTII aims to package these resources as a set of toolkits to be shared with African science granting councils as part of a project supporting the councils to strengthen their capacity in data management and using R&D data as evidence to inform national policy.

CeSTII wishes to appoint two toolkit development specialists, on a freelance basis, to assist in developing the toolkits. The two freelancers will have complementary toolkit development expertise: one specialises in content curation and the other in digital illustration/visual translation. It is proposed that the toolkit development includes curating various training materials and other project materials, and multimedia enhancements such as infographics, illustrations, and animated videos to enhance usebility and uptake.

The Freelancers will report to the Project Leader and collaborate closely with the project team. The appointed freelancers will be expected to deliver work of the highest quality, on time, and within budget. The appointed content curation specialist would need to organise and structure toolkit content into sets of guidelines, templates, and tools. The digital illustration/visual translation specialist would need to be proficient in translating complex or technical concepts through crafting informative and engaging visuals.

**Minimum Requirements**:

- Honors or Master’s degree in the sciences or social sciences/humanities, including but not limited to science writing or science communication, instructional systems design, fine art, information design or related fields.
- Proven experience in content management and curation/ Proven experience in illustration, with a strong portfolio of styles and techniques.
- Demonstrable track record of training material composition and implementation.
- Demonstrable track record of compiling multimedia toolkits, including toolkits for research and/or community development.
- Proficiency in content management systems and digital tools for organising and presenting information/ Proven technical knowledge of graphic art design and use of Adobe Creative Suite or similar packages.
- Familiarity with R&D/innovation survey methodologies is advantageous.
- Experience in instructional design principles and creating educational resources.
- Experience in creating cartoon animation using, for example, Adobe Animate or similar packages, will be an advantage.
- Strong organisational and project management skills with an ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
