Johannesburg, South Africa NMS Infrastructure Full time

NMS Infrastructure (NMSI) is a small but highly successful UK turnkey contractor principally in the health care, agriculture, housing, education and infrastructure sector providing new facilities across sub-Saharan Africa. These facilities are generally in rural areas often hundreds of kilometres from the nearest town.

NMSI work through the whole project life cycle from project definition, financing, site identification, design, construction, final fit-out and end-user training. A key element of our work is in construction which includes initial geotechnical, hydrogeological, and topographical surveys, groundworks, foundation construction, steel erection, walling, roofing, plumbing, electrical and finishing trades. We work with specialist construction companies and sub-contractors in Africa.

The Health & Safety of our contractors and our own staff is our number one priority, consequently this position is for a Group Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) Manager who will report directly to the Director of Sustainability & ESG and work across all business activities and projects.

**THE ROLE
The HSSE Manager is responsible for overseeing, coordinating and promoting a culture of safety, security, and environmental management across all levels of NMSI.
- To visit our sites and local offices on a regular basis - at least bi-annually or even quarterly (depending on the progress of the project at any given point) to carry out Health & Safety audits of our contractors and sub-contractors. To ensure that H&S standards are being met, records are kept of daily toolbox talks and other safety briefings; unsafe actions are identified, and corrective action requests are closed out; records are kept of _inter alia _lost time injuries, first aid cases and near misses and a yellow card/red card system is kept in place to monitor persistent unsafe working practices.
- Liaise and have regular safety meetings (timescale to be determined) with the NMSI local Director & General Manager.
- Monitor security alerts for the countries in which we are operating in respect of war, terrorist threats and other security issues that may affect our staff or contractors.
- Have oversight of the NMSI’s UK offices. Visit the UK at least annually to audit the offices in Poole, Market Harborough and London to monitor _inter alia_ fire alarm systems/drills, emergency evacuation procedures and safe working procedures including an audit of display screen equipment.
- Provide monthly dashboard reports to the Executive Management Board (EMB) particularly highlighting any lost time injuries, first aid cases and so on and the actions taken.
- Contribute HSSE statistics and trends to the Environmental Compliance team for its bi-annual monitoring e-reports.
- Oversee the implementation of the Construction Environmental & Social Management Plans for each project including reporting non-conformances and corrective actions back to the Director of Sustainability & ESG.
- Any other tasks as identified by the Director of Sustainability & ESG or EMB.

**SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE**
- Professional qualifications - Minimum NEBOSH (or equivalent) Professional Certificate or equivalent.
- Minimum 15 years progressive experience working in HSE positions, including having previously held Project HSE Manager positions in construction and/or mining.
- Previous experience working in remote locations such as Africa, Far East and Middle East.
- A track record of mentoring personnel of varied nationalities.
- Strong interpersonal skills and proven track record within Project HSE delivery.
- Extensive experience working with Office Suite programs (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook) and HSE database/reporting/training systems.
