The incumbent will be responsible for guiding Mondi (Senior Management, Area Managers and
Silviculture Foresters) on all silviculture aspects pertaining to the business of growing
trees for pulp.

EDUCATION
- MIN EDUCATION REQUIRED:
- Senior Certificate
- TERTIARY: ESSENTIAL- BSc/ B-tech Forestry or similar equivalent qualification
- MSc/MFor or Ph.D (Silviculture related thesis) - desirable

SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in an operational Silviculture and technical position.

RESPONSIBILITIES / KPAS:
1. Company Silvicultural Policy, Procedures and Best practice:
1.1. Develops and updates the Silviculture Procedures and ensures implementation thereof by
Foresters and Area Managers.
1.2. Identifies and formulates Best Silvicultural practices for Mondi through relevant experience
and current research (through various academic and research organizations) and ensures
implementation of the above.
1.3. Draw up and implement all necessary documentation for use by Foresters in order to execute
silviculture operations in terms of Mondi’s standards i.e. Silviculture dockets and implement
these through informal and formal training.
1.5. Participates in plant protection working groups such as FABI and the TIPWG.

2. Liaison with research and other institutions

2.1. Liaises with Universities, research institutions and other external and internal bodies to
stay abreast of latest technological developments and initiatives.

3. Technology Transfer

3.1. Facilitates Silviculture Technology transfer to Foresters, Area Managers and other operational
and technical staff through workshops, field days and symposia to enhance knowledge and implement
best operating practices.

4. Audits and Assessments

4.1. Audits Mondi’s silvicultural operations to keep abreast of the status of silvicultural practices
and to identify and address problems.

5. Projects

5.1. Initiate and manage Silviculture projects within Mondi, with the intention of enhancing the way
silvicultural practices are executed to commercialise the outcomes as standard Mondi operational
practices. e.g.
5.1.1. Mechanical pitting project
5.1.2. Fertilising projects
5.1.3. Mechanical planting project
5.1.4. Spacing project (mechanical silviculture and harvesting)

6. Mondi Trial Database Management

6.1. Manage Mondi’s trial data base (Silviculture Research), to facilitate the accurate spatial recording
of trials as well as providing a preventative management function w.r.t maintaining the integrity of
these trials.

7. FSC Approved Chemical lists

7.1. Manage Mondi’s list of approved chemicals and making sure this information is disseminated
and understood throughout Mondi.
Carries out any other reasonable task as instructed by Line Management.
