RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
- Supervise postgraduate students;
- Conduct research and produce accredited publication outputs;
- Perform academic administration and other duties as determined by the Head of Department;
- Participate in the Sociology Department’s strategic initiatives relating to teaching, research and community engagement;
- Participate in departmental, faculty and University committees or task teams.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
**Lecturer**:

- A Master’s degree in Sociology or Gender Studies or a closely related discipline relevant to the teaching offered in the Department;
- Appropriate teaching experience in gender/women’s studies or closely a related field;
- Accredited research outputs appropriate to the post level.

**Senior Lecturer**:

- A doctoral degree in Sociology or Gender Studies or a closely related discipline relevant to the academic offering in the Department;
- Appropriate teaching experience, including curriculum design and development, in gender /women’s studies or closely related field;
- Proven supervision to completion of Masters and/or doctoral students;
- Accredited research outputs appropriate to the post level;
- Proven participation in relevant professional activities.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

- Excellent communication and teamwork skills;
- Commitment to on-going curriculum transformation;
- Commitment to engage with new teaching technologies and methodologies;
- Commitment to the development of South African sociology.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
**Lecturer**:

- A doctoral degree in Sociology or Gender Studies or a closely related discipline relevant to the teaching of the Department, or significant progress towards a doctoral degree;
- Specialisation in the area of gender studies that will advance the development of the Department’s teaching programme;
- Experience in teaching research methods;
- Proven supervision experience appropriate to the post level;
- Evidence of experience in academic administration;
- Experience in curriculum design and development;
- Proven participation in relevant professional activities.

**Senior Lecturer**:

- A doctoral degree in Sociology or Gender Studies or a closely related discipline;
- Specialisation in the area of gender studies that will advance the development of the Department’s teaching programme;
- Experience in teaching research methods;
- Experience in curriculum design and development;
- Successful supervision of postgraduate students at both the Masters and doctoral levels;
- Evidence of experience in academic administration;
- Evidence of attracting research funding;
- Proven participation in relevant professional and community engagement activities

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
