**Main purpose of the job**:

- To conduct research and to provide scientific support towards polio eradication efforts

**Location**:

- **NICD, Sandringham - Johannesburg**

**Key performance areas**:

- Perform basic and advanced analysis and interpretation of data produced from sequencing systems
- Conduct and initiate research in the area of PCR and sequencing workflows
- Work closely with researchers and collaborators to generate/provide data analysis reports and perform custom analysis as requested
- Conduct relevant research (basic and applied) that promotes departmental interests to gain new knowledge and improve understanding in line with the NICD’s goal of becoming a world-class public health institute and research organization

**Required minimum education and training**:

- **Bachelor of Science Degree (Honours) in Medical Science or related field**

**Required minimum work experience**:

- **Minimum of 1 year working experience in a Medical Science or related environment**

**Required minimum education and training**:

- HPCSA registration is desirable but not a requirement

**Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities**:

- **Experience in polioviruses would be advantageous**:

- **Experience working in a diagnostic laboratory would be advantageous**:

- Knowledge of appropriate research methodologies and writing research publications
- Knowledge of the use of Microsoft databases
- The incumbent should possess communication skills (verbal and written)
- Troubleshooting skills
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to work within a multidisciplinary team and independently
- Pay attention to detail and be able to stick to strict work deadlines
- Should be computer literate and possess problem-solving skills
