Clinical Assistant: Laboratory Animal Science

RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Enrol for MMedVet (LAS) and meet learning outcomes required for specialist training in Laboratory Animal Science;
- Render laboratory animal veterinary service in OVARU;
- Play an active role in the health monitoring of laboratory animals under controlled environmental conditions;
- Play an active role in OVARU research projects, with emphasis on ensuring compliance with animal ethics standards;
- Play an active role in facilitating of contract research projects for external clients such as the South African Pharmaceutical and Agrichemical industries;
- Play an active role in the teaching and training of staff and students;
- Perform departmental administrative and other duties as determined by the line manager; and
- Participate in the Animal Ethics Committee in the University.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

- BVSc-degree or BVMCh or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
- Registration as a Veterinarian with the SAVC or authorisation by the SAVC to enrol for MMedVet studies;
- Applicable experience of at least two years as a veterinarian, or training of at least one year in the specific field as an intern at a recognised training facility; and
- Compliance with entry requirements for a MMedVet programme in the Department of Paraclinical Sciences.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

- Commitment to further academic development;
- Subject knowledge relevant to the field;
- Appropriate language and communication skills;
- Good interpersonal skills;
- Good computer skills (Windows, MS Office, internet); and
- Afterhours availability for rotational clinical service.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

- Clinical experience with rodents, rats or other exotic animals; and
- Exposure to research in an academic environment.

The total remuneration package for this position will be approximately R539,166 per annum as determined by UP policy guidelines.
