Communications Specialist

Overview:
Reporting to the Marketing & Communications Manager, the incumbent is responsible for proactively and consistently creating a positive and respected narrative that is aligned with the strategic goals of Lafarge South Africa.
This is achieved through:
- Acting as the Custodian of the Company’s corporate message and public image by ensuring that strict and effective communication plans are in place at all times.
- Actively managing relations with external stakeholders & Internal stakeholders who may have a bearing on the short, medium
- or long-term success of LSA.
- Managing internal communications (memos, newsletters etc.)
- Drafting content (e.g. press releases) for mass media or company website

**Employee Engagement**:
- Develop and drive the implementation of internal communication strategy that enhance employee engagement.
- Support business and work closely with Senior Management in managing change to ensure that employees are appropriately engaged with the focus of developing and implementing change management programmes, roll out of new and improved systems, policies and procedures within the company:
- Identify every possible vehicle to showcase the new direction and thinking
- Mobilize employees behind company’s vision, strategy and values
- Amplify new behavior either through example, Recognition programmes
- Provide avenues for employees to ask questions seek clarifications and provide input and have dialogue on issues.
- Craft key messages that are aligned with the company’s strategic vision and accurately reflects course of action taken or to be taken.
- These messages will be incorporated in all relevant communication developed by the communications such as media releases, presentations, letters, speeches, and communication on social media
- Oversee the seamless execution of company internal events & campaigns
- Serve as an Editor for the development, production and maintenance of the company’s internal communication vehicles
- Be custodian of all communication channels i.e. Intranet site, notice boards, Newsletter etc.
**Corporate Communication and Media Issues**:
- Manage /coordinate the Company’s sponsorship & donation activities in accordance to the approved policy. Liaise with site Committees to ensure alignment with Policy.
- Review the crisis communication process to ensure that it is air tight should the situation crop up.
- Draft holding statements for media in the event of reputational risk / crises
- Collate relevant proof points from various departments within the company to draw awareness to company’s position
- Find opportunities to showcase the company’s achievements and strengths
- Identify and select the appropriate communications management partners (i.e. PR firm, events companies etc.) to drive the right messages on the right platforms, supported by the appropriate corporate branding properties.
- Using strong communication skills, both in writing and verbally, and an ability to produce effective copy, support all functions in the BU with correspondence.
- Review communications such as press releases, speeches, publications or events to convey the desired Company position.
- Co-ordinate media information, media liaison and press releases.
- Train internal stakeholders on media management.
- Monitor media coverage and maintain strong media relationships.
- Interface to the Regional / Global organization.
**General Management**:
- Adhere to the Company’s Code of Business Conduct at all times and assure the compliance of the entire Corporate Affairs team.
- Develop and maintain strong team work with the Operations and other cross-functional teams i.e. SHE, Legal etc.
- Demonstrate a personal commitment to Health, Safety and the Environment.
- Manage the communications annual budget cycle, cost forecasting and key Corporate Affairs contracts.
**Experience**:
- Minimum 3-4 years’ experience in related position
- Solid experience in external & external communication & media management
- Excellent business understanding coupled with strong experience in public affairs & Community relations
- Experience in the mining sector would be useful
Knowledge & Skills:
- Strong communication skills, both in writing and verbally, and an ability to produce effective copy.
- Strong people management skills.
- Confidence, resilience and diplomacy.
- Enthusiasm and a positive attitude.
- Ability to develop relationships and influence people.
- Creative skills.
