**Job Advert Summary**:
The Developmental, Capable and Ethical State (DCES) is a research division within the HSRC and employs a multi-disciplinary group of social scientists who conduct numerous empirical and policy-related studies.

The DCES division is looking to appoint suitably qualified professionals to take on the position of Senior Research Specialist. This position supports and assists the Divisional Executive and the Strategic Leads in implementing the five-year strategic plan of the HSRC. The Developmental, Capable and Ethical State (DCES) division conducts transdisciplinary, intersectional, policy and programme-relevant research. The two over-arching questions that guide the research interventions are:

- How to strengthen democracy through transparent governance, accountable leadership and reinvigorated public participation/ civic engagement; and
- How to ensure sustainable development through peace, human and social security

A developmental, capable, and ethical state is not possible without ensuring peace and sustainable security within South Africa and beyond its borders. In order to work towards a more socially cohesive citizenry and safer and resilient communities, it is necessary to focus on building a “better South Africa, a better Africa, and a better world.”

The **Mission** of DCES is for it to conduct cutting-edge research in the areas of peace, human security, sustainability, democracy, governance and citizenship in an engaging manner that focuses on building a better life for all.

The position will be based in Cape Town, Pretoria, or Durban

**Minimum Requirements**:
**Key requirements depending on the level of appointment**:

- A doctorate (Ph.D.) in the social or economic sciences or related disciplines;
- An established research career as evidenced by publications and or involvement in research impact and business development
- At least six years’ experience post PhD qualification coupled with 12 or more peer-reviewed publications of which several are international
- Excellent writing skills necessary for publication in internationally accredited peer-reviewed academic journals, and for drafting briefing papers and reports;
- Record of raising funds for research.
- An interest in research impact and business development will be an advantage.
- A sound grounding in research methods, especially quantitative approaches, will be a strong recommendation;
- Intellectual and personal integrity, imagination and drive;
- A strong user orientation, based on a commitment to social research that makes a difference;
- Build visible national, continental, and international impact and research development partnership
- Mentor junior researchers/interns in impact and business and development
- Work with DCES research team to communicate research findings and publish in peer-reviewed journals

**Duties and Responsibilities**:
**Key responsibilities**:

- Develop a programme of work on research impact assessment and business development for the division;
- Be the liaison between the HSRC Impact Centre and Business Development and the division on all matters that relate research impact and business development in the division
- Provide leadership and coordination of research impact and business division in the divisions. This work with entail:

- a)** Research Impact**
- Help with research dissemination activities to promote research visibility, policy uptake and impact.
- Assist researchers to systematically document evidence of impact
- Consolidate and share impact evidence with the HSRC Impact Centre for inclusion in the institutional impact reports
- Ensuring that researchers in the DCES division are well-informed about the HSRC structures, tools, systems and processes for research impact and business development
- Engender a culture of impact assessment through capacity development activities and support of researchers
- Assist researchers in DCES to conceptualise and lead on the science and measurement of impact of the work that they do - research, capacity building, policy and practice engagements
- **b) Business Development**
- Develop a strategy or system of identifying relevant local and international calls for funding and sharing this with the relevant researchers in the division
- Provide structured support to researchers responding to calls for funding and ensuring that funder requirements are met and proposals are successfully submitted
- Independent of specific funding calls, identify potential funders that support research projects aligned with the DCES division priorities
- Support the division to expand its scientific and funding stakeholder networks through various engagement activities
- Participate in local, regional and continental activities that are likely to assist DCES establish or strengthen existing network
