Our reputable Consulting client that is based in Johannesburg is seeking a skilled Data Scientist to join their team as **Head of Data Science**.

The Head of Data Science will lead the Data Science team and strategy for the group. This includes delivery of actuarial data science and actuarial automation services to clients. The Head of Data Science will oversee design, development, deployment, monitoring, and maintenance of solutions to clients. This also includes leading a a team of data scientists and be responsible for their training and development.

**Requirements**:

- Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Economics, Mathematics, or similar quantitative discipline
- At least 8 - 10 years’ experience, 5+ in data science
- Statistics, maths, economics, or other related field
- Preferably an actuary or has knowledge of actuarial principles
- Possess analytical and critical ability.
- Ability to communicate with staff of all levels
- 5 years’ experience designing and building statistical forecasting models
- Experience designing and building machine learning models
- Industry specific experience in financial services, banking, insurance, or related
- Experience with modern development and deployment tools e g Git, Docker
- Actuarial background and experience highly advantageous

**Technical Competencies**:

- Strong analytical skills with the ability to effectively define business issues
- Excellent problem solving skills including the ability to analyse and resolve complex problems using data and statistical methods
- Advanced Python and R programming, advanced Python scientific computing knowledge and strong SQL skills
- Knowledge of other programming languages or libraries (such as Spark, orchestration frameworks, etc is beneficial but not required
- Experience with statistical analysis and reporting of results
- Cloud Data Engineering Analytics ( AWS, GCP) would be advantageous
- Data visualization tool experience such as with Tableau or similar would be advantageous
- Ability to work under pressure in a fast paced and rapidly changing environment
- Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written in English), with proven ability to convey complex messages clearly and with conviction
- Proven experience working with Machine Learning/Deep Learning for real world problems
- Practical experience design, and execution and delivery of statistical data science machine learning models
- Experience managing/leading technical teams (with at least 5 years relevant work experience e g in data science)

**Responsibilities**:

- Advising clients on how best to use their data to deliver scale able, valuable, actionable insights
- Form relationships with clients, understand their needs, and advise on the appropriate solutions to their data and actuarial needs incorporating data science and automation based solutions
- Oversee and hands on designing, developing, deploying, monitoring, and maintaining of solutions created for clients
- Build dashboards, identify and track key metrics to monitor performance of models deployed at clients
- Advise on best practice to enhance traditional actuarial workflows using data science and machine learning technologies
- Communicate solutions and recommendations in clear, concise, and compelling ways and influence senior leadership of clients through data driven insights
- Lead, train and mentor junior members of the team
- Advise senior management on best practice and strategic vision of the data science team
- Budget responsibility and growth of data science division
- Develop and action long term strategy
