We are seeking a compassionate and experienced Counsellor to provide counselling and support to our neurodiverse students. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of neurodiversity and a strong commitment to supporting students in developing coping strategies, improving social skills, and enhancing emotional well-being. This role involves providing one-on-one counselling, group therapy, advocacy, and creating personalised plans to help our students thrive in academic and personal settings.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Student Counsellor / Additional Needs Programme Coordinator:

  • Work with neurodiverse students and student groups to improve the mental, emotional and physical well-being of students;
  • Create safe spaces for neurodiverse students to discuss emotions and experiences;
  • Implement Support Intervention Plans for Additional Needs students;
  • Facilitate workshops for Lecturers and Support Staff; providing insight and tools on supporting neurodiverse students;
  • Examine issues such as stress, anxiety, depression, substance abuse, relationships, poor self-image, grief, self-harm behaviours;
  • Refer students to psychologists and other professionals/services where necessary;
  • Implement a holistic approach to mental health care;
  • Plan and execute counselling workshops in accordance with the annual Student Support calendar;
  • Work closely with the Registrar Department in identifying problem cases after the release of monthly reports;
  • Represent the department at events such as Open Days, Graduations, campus initiatives and any other event indicated throughout the year.

Skills and Qualifications required:

  • Registered counsellor/psychologist (SA Boards)
  • Experience working with neurodiverse students
  • At least three years of experience in a similar role

  • Possess strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Have strong judgement and decisiveness
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Good organisational skills with attention to detail
  • Good communications skills, both oral and written (English)
  • Be able to manage several tasks at once and determine priorities
  • Be passionate about working with neurodiverse individuals
  • Be computer literate with proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
