Electrical Estimation & Design Engineer - ECSA - HVAC – East Rand

As an Electrical Engineer within our Estimation Department, you will be instrumental in producing precise and timely electrical designs that comply with both internal and external regulatory standards. This role involves the development of detailed engineering designs, as well as providing support for cost estimation and the preparation of tender documents.

Your primary responsibility will be to ensure that all designs are meticulously accurate, error-free, and delivered within project timelines and tender submission deadlines. This position is well-suited for a dedicated Electrical Engineer who is passionate about delivering high-quality designs and contributing to dependable project estimations.

Key Accountabilities:
  1. Read carefully the project's specifications, identify relevant codes and standards to have a clear understanding of the design inputs and ensure conformity to requirements.
  2. Plan own work to deliver the expected output on time based on the priority order set by the supervisor.
  3. Perform design modelling, prepare accurate calculation notes, and develop detailed designs in the area of specialty according to the related design manual and predefined design concept to deliver error-free design, on time, as well as clear and presentable calculation notes.
  4. Prepare and update the materials take-off, ensuring design quantities and specifications do not surpass the allocated budget for the project.
  5. Prepare as-built drawings related to the executed work on site and assist project design engineers in developing the Operations & Maintenance Manual for future maintenance work on the project site.
  6. Send internal e-mails and professional letters, attend internal meetings, and coordinate with relevant departments to provide necessary technical assistance/information and/or receive clear orientation.
  7. Conduct internal presentations on technical subjects to enhance presentation skills, prepare for external presentations, and share knowledge with colleagues.
  8. Provide assistance to other departments and colleagues and give directives to CAD operators to ensure quality work.
  9. Perform QA/QC activities for own, peers, and lower levels' designs to detect, analyze and eliminate discrepancies while learning from mistakes.
  10. Accept comments positively and learn from experiences to increase capability and skill level, reducing the risk of repeating mistakes.
  11. Read carefully the tender documents, understand the project's type and scope of work, and discuss relevant requirements and specifications with the estimation team to ensure conformity during the estimation process.
  12. Prepare the preliminary design of the bid and/or the pre-dimensioning on time and as per the tender's requirements.
  13. Prepare a detailed BOQ to determine and confirm project quantities to be priced.
  14. Request quotations for items in conjunction with the procurement department, analyze and compare received quotations, check their conformity to defined specifications, and discuss findings with the senior estimation engineer to choose the most suitable ones.
  15. Collaborate with relevant departments to compile the complete project offer, ensuring all technical, financial, and commercial aspects are accurately integrated, reviewed, and aligned with the tender requirements and the company's standards before submission.

  1. Ability to identify appropriate design codes and standards.
  2. Familiarity with South African codes and standards.
  3. Quality of work planning/organization | Timely execution of assigned tasks.
  4. Conformity of prepared designs to design manual, codes, and standards.
  5. Error-free design | Timely delivery | Accuracy of submitted calculation notes.
  6. Error-free as-built drawings | Timely delivery of as-built drawings.
  7. Timely preparation and submission of detailed Bills of Quantities (BOQs).
  8. Quality of quotations requested, analyzed, and compared for conformity to project specifications.
  9. Quality and timeliness of inputs provided for the estimation scope, ensuring accurate project costing.
  10. Participation in compiling the final project offer, ensuring all estimation and technical aspects are accurate and aligned with tender requirements.
Qualifications, Experience, and Skills Required:
  1. B. Engineering (Electrical) degree or equivalent.
  2. ECSA membership (Pr. Eng.).
  3. Minimum 5 years' experience.
  4. Understanding of engineering standards.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively internally.
  6. Good presentation capability.
  7. Good team member with concern for details, effectiveness, efficiency, quality, and safety.
