DEPARTMENT OF PRODUCTION ANIMAL STUDIES
LECTURER / SENIOR LECTURER : PORCINE HEALTH AND PRODUCTION (ONE POST)

Responsibilities
The successful candidate will actively participate in the following areas:

  1. Teaching and practical training of undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students (including special emphasis on porcine health and production).
  2. Clinical services through the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital, surrounding community and satellite clinics, including participation in a 24-hour service; actively recruiting additional clientele to fulfill this mandate.
  3. Postgraduate training and supervision where appropriate.
  4. Research and publication in scientific journals.
  5. Networking with relevant industry stakeholders.
  6. Community engagement – participation and supporting student activities.
  7. Administrative and other duties as delegated by the Head of Department.
  8. Academic self-development.

Minimum Requirements

  1. A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification.
  2. Must be registered or willing to register in for Masters programme – MSc in veterinary science (relevant production animal focus) or MMedVet degree in Porcine health and production, and be able to graduate in reasonable time.
  3. Registration with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) as a Veterinarian.
  4. A minimum of three years of veterinary clinical experience predominantly in porcine health and production aspects (case log required).
  5. Evidence of continued professional development or continued education development.
  6. An appropriate MMedVet-degree and / or equivalent specialty board certification in Porcine Health and Production.
  7. Registration with the SAVC as a specialist.
  8. Minimum of five years of veterinary clinical experience with at least three years' experience in predominantly Porcine Health and Production aspects (case log).
  9. At least two full peer-reviewed papers in an accredited scientific journal as author or co-author.

Or

  1. A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification.
  2. MSc degree with particular focus on production animals.
  3. Registration with the SAVC as a Veterinarian.
  4. Minimum of five years of veterinary clinical experience with at least three years' experience in predominantly Porcine Health and Production aspects (case log) post acquiring a Master's degree.
  5. Five or more research-based full papers in an accredited scientific journal as senior author and / or co-author in the last five years.

Required Competencies (Skills, Knowledge and Behavioural Attributes)

  1. Proven knowledge and competence in veterinary clinical work with an emphasis on porcine health and production aspects.
  2. Research interest appropriate to the position.
  3. Commitment to obtain a PhD in reasonable time in a field relative to the discipline of porcine health and production or production aspect.
  4. Good language and communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  5. Generic teaching competence including proficiency with presentation, word-processing and spreadsheet software.

Added Advantages and Preferences

  1. Experience with relevant specialised procedures, techniques and tools.
  2. Tertiary teaching and mentoring experience.
  3. Exposure to research in an appropriate field.

Salary Details
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines.

UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
