Under general supervision, performs semi-skilled and unskilled work in the maintenance and repair of public parks, athletic fields and facilities.

Operates moderate-sized equipment as required.

Reports to the assigned Foreman.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Performs landscaping, minor trades work, pesticide application, planting of shrubs and bushes, shrub and bush trimming, tree removal, tree trimming.
  2. Completes assigned projects as directed by foreman.
  3. Conducts daily inspections of City Parks.
  4. Ensures that all equipment has gas.
  5. Assists in setting up for special events.
  6. Helps repair all wood fencing in the park.
  7. Inspects playground equipment.
  8. Performs maintenance on all equipment, including edges, weed eaters, etc.
  9. Mows City parks.
  10. Performs sanitation work (cleaning restrooms, picking up trash).

Minimum Education and Training:

Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by one to two years of experience in facility/grounds maintenance, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

May require licensure for pesticide application.

Must possess and maintain a valid state of Florida driver's license.

Must possess or obtain the most current FEMA and Incident Command System certifications within 6 months of appointment to the job.

Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required Skill Requirements:

  1. Has knowledge of the methods, procedures, and policies of the Parks and Recreation Department as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Groundkeeper.
  2. Has the ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply regulations, procedures, and related information.
  3. Has knowledge of general facility and grounds maintenance procedures and techniques.
  4. Has knowledge of the standard equipment, tools, materials, and practices of the industry.
  5. Is able to operate heavy machinery with skill and safety.
  6. Has skill in the care and use of required equipment and tools.
  7. Is able to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
  8. Knows how to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.
  9. Is able to prepare simple records and reports.
  10. Is able to read and interpret a variety of materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job.
  11. Is able to analyze problems that arise on the job and make valid recommendations.
  12. Is able to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need for direct supervision.
  13. Is able to use independent judgment in performing routine tasks.
  14. Is able to provide assistance to supervisors and co-workers as needed.
  15. Has the ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency.
  16. Knows how to perform duties in a courteous manner and communicate effectively with co-workers and the public.

Physical Requirements:

Must be physically able to operate vehicles, trucks, heavy equipment, hand and power tools, etc.

Tasks involve the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that involves the lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds) and occasionally heavier objects and materials.

Working Conditions:

Works indoors and outdoors in all types of weather.

Is able to perform work in adverse conditions, including but not limited to exposure to extreme heat and cold, wetness, humidity, traffic hazards, machinery hazards, toxic agents, noise, smoke, dust, pollen, dirt, etc.
