Prax South Africa and Prax Botswana are newly constituted entities, that have come about as a result of Prax Group's acquisition of a stake in a refinery and other related mid/downstream operations.

The Prax Group is a fast-growing, privately-owned organization headquartered in the UK with operations in South Africa, Botswana, US, Singapore, Germany, Denmark, Austria and Switzerland.

Main Purpose:

The company wishes to employ a seasoned Tax Specialist (with Oil industry experience) to be based in Johannesburg. Working directly with the Finance Director, refinery and wider teams, the Tax Analyst will primarily manage tax operations for South Africa and Botswana. This role is key to ensuring that the company operates efficiently within the legal tax framework while minimizing financial exposure. There is scope for additional international tax compliance opportunities for the right candidate.

Key Responsibilities:

Tax Compliance:

  • Ensure the company adheres to all local and international tax regulations and laws.
  • Prepare and submit all tax returns (e.g., Excise & Customs; VAT; Corporate Tax; WHT) on time, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Manage tax audits and resolve any issues with the relevant tax authority.
  • Monitor changes in tax legislation and assess their impact on the company's operations.

Tax Planning and Strategy:

  • Support the Group Tax team on the tax implications of business decisions, including investments, mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures.
  • Conduct tax efficiency analysis for international operations, considering tax treaties, withholding tax, and transfer pricing.

Transfer Pricing:

  • Ensure that transfer pricing policies comply with regulations.
  • Prepare and maintain transfer pricing documentation, ensuring that the company's intercompany transactions are compliant with the arm's length principle.

Tax Risk Management:

  • Identify potential tax risks and work to mitigate them through proactive planning.
  • Implement tax risk management processes.
  • Ensure that tax accounting and reporting meet internal and external standards.

Reporting and Documentation:

  • Assist in the preparation of tax-related reports for senior management, auditors, and regulators.
  • Create and maintain detailed Tax Process documentation.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records for tax filings and audits.
  • Support internal and external audits related to tax matters.
  • Maintain a register of all licenses and permits (Import/Export), whilst ensuring timeous renewal/cancellations for the same.
  • Manage all applications for SOS licences as may be required by NATREF from time to time.

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Liaise with external tax consultants and legal advisors to manage complex tax issues.
  • Collaborate with other Group departments such as legal, finance, and operations to ensure tax compliance in business operations.
  • Key relationship owner between BURS and SARS, ensuring that both entities honour their license conditions, and that payments as may be due to authorities are paid timeously thus avoiding any penalties.

Training and Mentorship:

  • Share knowledge on tax issues with other departments to raise awareness and improve compliance across the organization.

Key Skills and Qualifications:

Education:

  • A degree in Taxation, Accounting, Finance, or a related field. A post-graduate qualification in tax (e.g., a Masters or professional certification like CTA, CA(SA)) is advantageous.

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of experience in tax-related roles, preferably within the oil & gas, energy, or natural resources sector.
  • Experience in tax compliance, planning, and transfer pricing.
  • Experience with international tax issues, including tax treaties, VAT, and corporate tax.

Technical Skills:

  • Knowledge of South African tax laws (Excise; Income Tax Act; VAT Act; etc.).
  • Botswana tax experience is a bonus.
  • Familiarity with global tax standards and practices.
  • Proficient in tax software and Excel.

Soft Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong attention to detail and a proactive approach to tasks.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in the oil and gas industry or in a multinational corporation.
  • Knowledge of the tax implications of energy projects, exploration, and extraction.
  • Familiarity with tax-related software used in large organizations.
