Organization: Amnesty International South Africa NPC (AISA) via Hashtag Nonprofit NPC Position title: Graduate Governance Fellowship Location: Johannesburg, South Africa Application deadline: 1 December 2025 Employment type: Full‑time Duration: 1 January 2026 – 31 December 2026 Job description: AISA is recruiting a young law graduate to assist Amnesty and its Board of Directors with drafting documents, research, analysis, policy formulation and execution of governance and other projects in the Johannesburg office. About this position: The fellowship is for a self‑motivated, independent person at the start of their career, committed to Amnesty’s values and goals, with a demonstrable history of activism in areas related to Amnesty’s work. The fellow will work closely with the Board and the Executive Director, using legal and policy skills to develop and support Amnesty’s governance policies and tasks. The fellowship also offers exposure to Amnesty’s partners in human rights through structured job‑shadowing partnerships. Benefits: Monthly stipend of R16 000 Direct exposure to Amnesty’s partners in human rights, including leading law firms and NGOs, through job‑shadowing partnerships Continuous learning and in‑house training opportunities Flexibility in working hours and extensive work‑from‑home options Additional information: Shortlisted candidates may be invited to an interview, and will consent to qualification verification, background checks and a suitability test The successful candidate will be informed by 13 December 2025 Candidates are expected to start work as soon as 2 January 2026, with induction and training Amnesty or any partner may require a candidate to sign a non‑disclosure or other agreement Amnesty reserves the right not to fill the position Roles and responsibilities: Researching and drafting Amnesty’s governance and other documents Contributing to discussions around AISA’s national and international governance policy positions Assisting the National Secretariat in research, advocacy and campaigning work Preparing and providing detailed minutes or reports from relevant board meetings Providing applicable administrative support, where required Qualifications and requirements: Law degree (LL.B. or equivalent) or any related degree Fluency in two South African languages is recommended Competencies and skills required: Interact with staff at all levels and communicate clearly with colleagues Write concisely, proof‑read policy and advocacy materials under tight deadlines Gather and process large amounts of legal and governance information Make presentations Accurately analyze issues and apply systematic reasoning to formulate responses Work under pressure, meet deadlines, and work self‑sufficiently with some guidance Willingness to travel Flexibility in working hours and ability to work from home or travel for work as needed Personal qualities required: Demonstrated commitment to activism and human rights Confident, assertive communicator who can work comfortably with diverse groups across all levels and various media Emotional intelligence Attention to detail and high integrity Ability to prioritize work and manage deadlines Reflective, open to learning and self‑care For non‑South African nationals or permanent residents, it is the applicant’s responsibility to obtain a valid work permit from the Department of Home Affairs.
