Nutrition Services Assistant I – Mountainside High School Purpose: The Nutrition Services Assistant I supports the Nutrition Services program by assisting in the preparation, service, and sales of meals to students in a sanitary, efficient, and customer‑friendly manner. Assignment Begin Date: 12-Nov-2025 Level: District/Department Working Calendar: 182 Days – 10‑month continuous labor Salary: $ – $ Employment Type: Part Time Position Category: Nutrition Services Start Time: 10:30 am End Time: 2:30 pm School Address: 10740 NE Walker Rd, Suite 1400, Hillsboro, OR 97006 Reports to: Nutrition Services Field Supervisor Essential Job Functions Conduct yourself in the best interest of students, in accordance with the highest traditions of public education and in support of the District’s mission. Prepare and serve appropriate quantities of food in a timely manner, assuring proper quality and quantity of food prepared. Prepare and assemble a variety of hot and cold entrées, fruits, vegetables, and other foods. Follow written menus, production records, and production standards. Follow recipes for consistent quality and cost-effectiveness; provide feedback to Leads regarding recipes. Prepare food service facilities for the serving of food. Minimize waste. Operate standard kitchen equipment such as a cash register, oven, steamer, dishwasher, food warmer, steam‑jacketed kettle, steam table, and wrapping/sealing machine following proper procedures. Assure that serving lines are properly stocked with adequate food, beverages, and supplies. Serve food from a steam table or cold counter. Follow Nutrition Services Department Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) SOPs for food safety and sanitation. Count money for the till and prepare moneyboxes or cash registers with the appropriate amount and denominations of change. Perform cashier functions using NS software; enter meal accounting and sales data, verify checks collected, close the till, and reconcile cash drawer. Complete and maintain daily and weekly records of meals and beverages served and foods leftover; maintain required records for meal production accounting. Wash and clean cafeteria tables. Wash and store equipment, pots, pans, trays, and other food service items; lift moderately heavy objects. Provide inventory and product usage information to Lead for ordering and record-keeping; assist Lead in counting supplies for monthly physical inventory. Assist other personnel, new employees, parent volunteers, and student helpers. Monitor equipment operation and report concerns and needs as required. Participate in required hours of annual continuing education, per federal law. Maintain effective working relationships with other members of the Department as well as with other school personnel and community members, including those from diverse cultures or backgrounds. Comply with all procedures outlined in the Code of Professional Conduct and related District policies. Required Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Criminal background check clearance. Required physical examination clearance. English reading, writing, and speaking proficiency. Ability to read, understand, and follow multi‑step written and verbal instructions in English. Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, fractions). Valid Food Handlers Card. Data recording ability. Visual acuity of 20/40 or better in both eyes. Availability to attend mandatory trainings, scheduled in‑services, and educational events outside of regular hours. Basic computer familiarity for data entry and email. Working Conditions The Nutrition Services Assistant I works primarily in an industrial school kitchen and cafeteria/lunchroom. The environment is often loud and includes exposure to hot surfaces, steam heat, cold temperatures, cleaning solvents, and vibration with some equipment. Other potential hazards include chemicals, fumes, communicable diseases, sharp objects, power/hand‑operated equipment, pinch points, odors, and slippery surfaces. The position requires constant standing/walking and moderate to fast‑paced movement. Physical Requirements Lifting up to 10 lbs. constantly, up to 20 lbs. frequently, up to 50 lbs. occasionally; carry loads up to 15 feet. Pushing/pulling up to 10 lbs. constantly, up to 20 lbs. frequently, up to 50 lbs. occasionally, up to 75 lbs. intermittently. Bending, twisting, kneeling, crouching, reaching, and using hands/arms continuously. Visibility, hearing, smelling, speaking for communication and safety. Other Information Work Year: 180 days, plus in‑service and training.
