Representative Job Description

Regional Representative and Assistant Regional Representatives – Job Descriptions The BJCP Bylaws contain general descriptions for the responsibilities of the BJCP President, Vice President, and Treasurer roles and broadly define the responsibilities as Regional Representatives. As part of creating Assistant Regional Representative positions, Position Descriptions for Regional Representatives and Assistant Regional Representatives were drafted. Representatives represent regions as defined by state and country boundaries. Assistant Regional Representatives work within regions at the local level, and are selected to be in proximity to clusters of BJCP judges and activity. Assistant Regional Representatives should be located throughout the region so that no two are in close proximity to each other, and do not have rigid boundaries of responsibility. In 2020, the BJCP Board approved guidelines for the selection of Assistant Regional Reps. Regional Representative Represent the interests of members residing within the region as a member of the Board of Directors and for the BJCP program. Serve as an alternate contact for the BJCP for members in the region, focusing on local matters. Vote on issues such as authorizing expenditures, allocating resources, setting policies, creating and filling staff positions, and delegating day‑to‑day responsibilities. Ensure BJCP activities remain aligned with the long‑term goals of the program. Serve as an ambassador, promoting the BJCP in a positive manner throughout the region and elsewhere. Support members by providing access to BJCP services, locating correct contacts, and acting on requests for services or information. Serve as a link between members in the region and the BJCP Board. Proactively interact with members at events (competitions, conferences, home‑brew club meetings, beer‑related events, the BJCP Facebook Group, BJCP Forums, JudgeNet email list) to disseminate information, identify issues, and bring new opportunities to the Board. Encourage potential judges and active members to become involved in BJCP activities and committees. Recruit and assign members to administer, proctor, and grade exams, coordinate continuing education events, and organize competitions; mentor as necessary. Identify and support regional training opportunities, continuing education events, and other regional events. Judge at competitions within the region and elsewhere, maintaining an active judging role. Contribute summaries of regional news and activities to the BJCP Newsletter, blog, or Annual Report. Travel as necessary to support the development of the BJCP, exam administration, proctoring, and other program activities. Be available for in‑person, telephone, or electronic meetings; remain responsive and advise other board members when out of contact. Attend BJCP Board and Staff events, including the National Homebrew Conference and the BJCP Staff Meetings and Members Meeting; if invited, judge at the GABF. Send congratulatory emails to members who achieve National or Master ranks (CCing the Regional Representative) and gauge their interest in serving the organization. Identify target areas for potential expansion, especially under‑represented regions. Participate on BJCP committees and projects as appropriate. Serve as a resource for competition organizers, exam organizers, and prospective judges; provide support or direct them to local assistance. Attempt to resolve or mediate local disputes and, if necessary, elevate them to the Regional Representative. Assistant Regional Representative Represent the interests of members residing within the region as a member of the Board of Directors and for the BJCP program.
