Production Lead

Education/Experience: A National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering. Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a related industry. Knowledge pertaining to the commercial diving industry would be advantageous. This will enable him/her to apply the principals of engineering to plan and execute standard and semi-custom production jobs from receiving to completion, during which the Production Lead is responsible for all key activities.
The successful incumbent will work closely with Production, Project Managers, Design Engineers, and Procurement departments, ensuring that production deadlines are met to provide unique products to the company’s clients. All product delivery queries will be routed through this position.
Key performance areas, but not limited to the following:
• Review and understand product technical specifications, assembly drawings or other documentation that indicates what needs to be produced. These include standard products and customer projects technical specifications, manuals, codes & regulations, engineering drawings, etc.
• Planning: Draw up a product realization plan, including all relevant activities such as procurement, internal and/or external manufacturing, human-, material- and tool resources, testing and documentation.
• Production of detailed written work instructions (OI) for manufacture and installation of products, internally and externally.
• Constantly follow up on outstanding items related to a production job.
• Execution: Manage all product realization activities as per the plan within the constraints of on time delivery, within budget and correct quality. Invoke mitigation plans if something unexpected occurs, causing deviation from plan.
• Re-negotiate schedules as required.
• Testing: All products (projects) must be tested in accordance with company policies and other applicable codes and standards. He/she would need to familiarize themselves with the necessary codes and standards.
• Commissioning: All products and systems must be fully commissioned before being delivered. This may require close interaction with 3rd Party surveyors from time to time.
• Documentation: Ensure all relevant documentation for a product or system, as was stipulated in the production handover, must be completed within a reasonable time frame, and handed to the Documentation Control Department and Production Administrator.
• Packing and Shipping: Ensure that Products and Systems are neatly and safely packed before delivery. It is also expected to assist Logistics with shipping arrangements.
• Liaise with Design Department regarding any design-related problems that were found during manufacturing.
• All activities must be executed in accordance with UH’s Integrated Management System (IMS) to ensure compliance with the company’s ISO9000, ISO14000 and ISO18000 accreditation.
• Finalize and/or confirm all Costs, Product Documentation including As-Builts, Supplier Certs and Redlines are all submitted for scanning and capture prior to Ending of Production jobs.
• Demonstrated ability in using ERP system for execution of Production jobs and Projects.
Attributes and additional skills:
• High level of technical competency to be applied in a high-pressure environment.
• Above average skills in the full MS Office suite.
• A basic knowledge of AutoCAD, SolidWorks and ERP software will be advantageous.
• Having a proactive nature with regards to getting jobs to the floor – parts and OI files must be prioritized.
• A basic understanding of relevant codes such as ASME, ABS, DNV, LRS, IMCA, IMO, etc. would be advantageous.
• Knowledge of ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS18001 would be advantageous.
• Able to do report writing (ISO, OHSA).
• Good temperament to deal with people in all situations.
• Assertive, creative, and analytical.
• Above average communication skills in English (speak, read, write) to actively pass information across to clients, manufacturers, and co-workers.
• Above average ability to manage time effectively that includes working under pressure, meeting of deadlines, and delivering on-time while not comprising quality, performance, and reliability.
• Must be able to follow instructions to the minutest detail to ensure accuracy and Impeccable attention to detail is required.
• Not a clock watcher and able to work overtime.
• Ability to work both independently and in a team-based environment.
• RSA Citizens only.
• International travel may be required from time to time.
• Medical: must be clear of any conditions or comorbidities which might prevent you from executing your duties as required.
