Our client is searching for a Systems Engineer (Unix/Solaris)Contract: Permanent (a probation period will apply)Working model: HybridLocation: PretoriaJob Purpose:To work as part of a team, to manage the Unix/Solaris/Connect Direct environments.Role Responsibilities:System Administration Manage and maintain UNIX and Solaris operatingPerform regular system updates and patches to ensure security andMonitor system performance and troubleshoot issues as theyConnect:Direct Management Administer and configure Connect:Direct (formerly known as NDM) for file transferImplement automation scripts to facilitate scheduled and on-demand fileUser and Access Management Manage user accounts, roles, and permissions to ensure appropriate accessMonitor access logs and maintain compliance with securityBackup and Recovery Develop and execute backup and recovery plans for critical data andTest recovery processes to ensure data integrity andPerformance TuningAnalyse system performance metrics and make recommendations forOptimise system configurations to enhance throughput and reduceDocumentation and Reporting Maintain detailed documentation of system configurations, procedures, and troubleshootingGenerate reports on system performance, file transfers, and security logsCollaboration and Support Work with cross-functional teams to support application deployments andProvide technical support and guidance to users regarding system-relatedSecurity Management Implement security measures to protect systems against unauthorized access andRegularly review and update firewall and access controlVendor Interaction Coordinate with hardware and software vendors for support and maintenanceEvaluate new tools and technologies that can improve systemIncident Response Respond quickly to system outages or breaches and troubleshoot rootDevelop and implement incident response plans to mitigate futureRequired certificationsUNIX/Solaris Certifications: Certifications such as Solaris Certified Systems Administrator or UNIX System Administration certifications.Linux Certifications: Additional certifications like Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) if Linux experience is also relevant.Networking Certifications: Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or similar networkingSecurity Certifications: Certifications such as Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) or CompTIA Security+ can be advantageous.Work experience Years of Experience: 5 to 10 years of hands-on experience in system engineering, specifically with UNIX and Solaris environments.Connect:Direct Experience: Demonstrated experience in administering and managing Connect:Direct or similar file transfer technologies.Job related knowledge and skillsProficiency in UNIX and Solaris systemsExperience with Connect:Direct or similar file transfer technologies (an Advantage).Understanding of networking fundamentals and securityScripting skills (e.g., Shell, Perl) for automationStrong troubleshooting and problem-solvingFamiliarity with backup and recoveryPreferred Requirements:Relevant formal qualificationsPersonality Attributes:Conveys authentic enthusiasmAbility to think analytically, communicate effectively, and execute efficientlyPro-active approachPerforms work in a timely and high-quality mannerTake pride in your workAbility to multitaskBe willing to take on new tasksShow willingness to learn new processes, systems, technologiesBe comfortable with erratic work schedulesAttention to detailAbility to meet deadlines and handle priority changes as circumstances dictateAble to work independentlyExcellent client-servicing skillsAble to cope with stressful situationsEmpathy
