An opportunity for an experienced PROJECT & ENGINEERING MANAGER is required for permanent employment based in Richards Bay.

The Project & Engineering Manager is responsible for establishing and running the Projects and Engineering departments with the objective of ensuring all projects (including his/her own projects) are delivered safely, within the agreed scope, time, cost and quality. This role will oversee the portfolio of projects and engineering, providing expert knowledge and support and monitoring progress as well as reporting on various departmental statuses. This role will also ensure that project and engineering resources are efficiently allocated and have the correct tools and processes in place and those resources are trained and equipped to deliver successfully.

This position includes regular travel to Mozambique and will work on sites where drug and alcohol use is prohibited.

Manage the day-to-day activities of the Project and Engineering departments. Manage to ensure that projects are delivered; without injuries or breach of HSE rules and regulations, on-time, as per scope/specification, to high quality standards, within budget. Manage the Project and Engineering teams and provide performance feedback and goal-setting; conducts annual performance reviews and skills development and training. Further requirements include technical assistance/audits and marketing of the companys products and services to the client.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Projects

• In line with the contract and SOW handover from the Sales Department, responsible in defining the technical and financial project scope and objectives towards all relevant stakeholders; sub-contractors and clients.
• Plan, chair and record monthly Project Review Meetings with relevant stakeholders.
• Manage the safety aspect of all projects and report weekly project safety KPIs. This includes, but is not limited to OHS Act, Section 16.2, Section 8.2 legal appointments, the companys Golden Rules as well as client HSE requirements at Hillside and Mozal.
• Liaise closely with Finance Manager to ensure accurate and robust budget monitoring against project plans.
• Responsible to maintain monthly overview of all projects budget, monitor variations, and ensure timely cost control on projects, cashflows and invoicing on projects.
• Provide monthly cashflows forecast including all projects (cash collections and disbursements).
• Ensure monthly timesheets for all are submitted by required due date.
• Responsible for compiling and submitting required documents timely to allow the company and our sub-contractors timely site access.
• Assist the Technical Sales department with project related commercial offers.
• Responsible for technical risk analysis
• Ensure that all projects are delivered on-time, within scope, specification, quotation and budget.
• Define and coordinate internal resources and third parties/vendors for the flawless execution of projects.
• Manage project resource availability and allocation.
• Provide resources plan on a monthly and yearly basis to optimize allocation of resources.
• Contribute towards contractor vendor selection and approval.
• Develop a detailed project schedule to monitor and track progress of all projects.
• Measure and report on project performance using appropriate tools and techniques.
• Perform internal risk management to minimize project risks.
• Create and maintain comprehensive project documentation.
• Ensure post project reviews are in place within 10 days of projects completion and include lessons learnt exercises which identify both positive and negative outcomes to be actioned.

Engineering

• Overall management of the Engineering department ensuring that we are working on the correct priorities for the company. Manager to involve himself/herself as required to meet deadlines.
• Final approval of drawings
• Review and approval of Engineering and/or ISO standards, processes and procedures
• Review and approval of scope of works
• Review and approval of quality control plans
• Participate in NCR investigations and meetings when required
• Ensure monthly timesheets for all are submitted by required due date.

General

• Ensure that the companys Directives and Guidelines are adhered to
• Comply with legal, client and company specific requirements
• Comply with safety protocols in all work performed and report any near misses or incidents
• Define, implement and monitor KPIs for Projects and Engineering Departments.
• Ensure weekly and monthly meeting review with teams to monitor performance and provide guidance and support where needed.

PROBLEM SOLVING

• Strong project or programme management and excellent organisational skills are fundamental, as is the ability to liaise with people at all levels of the organisation.
• Ability to manage a range of projects types and complex business initiatives and change programmes
• Implement a mitigation plan in order to reduce the risks during the installation phase.
• Assist site teams with decision making in terms of changes to scope, delays etc.
• Manage changes to the project scope, project schedule, and project costs using appropriate verification techniques.
• Take all necessary actions to achieve contractual commitment.
• In case of identified hazards take necessary actions to report, eliminate the hazard or stop activities.
• This position oversees multiple activities at any one given time.
• The position may require ad hoc site supervision on projects where necessary.
• This position is responsible for ensuring there is a clear prioritised list of projects approved or awaiting approval.
• Carrying our monthly one-on-ones and yearly & half-year appraisals with all departmental employees.
• There is Health, Safety, Environmental, Quality and Budget responsibilities attached to this position.

• Maintain regular contact and a relationship with client end-users, ascertain needs, promote solutions, and develop business opportunities for subsidiary.
• Establish and maintain relationships with third parties/vendors/sub-contractors.
• Contribute towards good company culture, team morale and a healthy work environment in all areas.
• Good communication with other departments, as well as the back office.

INTERNAL / EXTERNAL IMPACTS

• Projects need to remain financially and technically viable. Projects impact company revenue, margins and operating costs, and thus form a key element of the business.
• Impacts to/from other departments need to be considered during the management of a project. For example warehouse operations, workshop facilities and tools, supply chain and finance.
• Resources from other departments might be used to plan, execute and hand over projects. Careful planning and negotiation with department managers is required.
• Company reputation depends on the successful managing and completion of projects.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:

• Degree or qualification in project and/or engineering management.
• ECSA registration advantageous.
• >5 Years practical experience in the projects/engineering management fields.
• >2 Years experience in an aluminium / manufacturing environment.
• Technical knowledge of equipment used in the aluminium industry.
• Proven working experience in project and/or engineering management and organisational skills
• Excellent client-facing and internal communication skills.
• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Microsoft Projects.
• Strong financial comprehension pertaining to budgets and job costing.
• Good understanding of principles of health, safety, environmental and quality in the workplace.
