The purpose of the position is to use expertise in garden cultivation and management to provide valuable guidance to farmers, landscapers and others in agriculture and gardening.

Job brief

We're looking for a horticulturist be in possession of National Diploma in Horticulture/ Landscape and should be registered with (SACLAP) South African Council of Landscape Architect Professionals.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualification(s):

• National diploma or bachelor's degree in horticulture or related qualification
• Grade 12 Matric

Added advantage:

• Driver's License

Experience:

• 2 years' relevant experience in horticulture.
• Experience in landscaping and pest control.

Knowledge of:

• Horticulture and Landscape Management
• Pest Control and Facilities Management Services
• Landscaping, plants, and their care
• Pruning of trees and plants
• Methods, tools, techniques, and supplies used in the development and maintenance of landscaped areas.
• Basic characteristics of health/disease in soil, plants, and trees
• Sprinkler and drip system use and maintenance.
• Safe work practices.

Skills:

• Excellent knowledge of MS Office
• Prioritizing, time management and organizational skills
• Attention to Detail because it allows them to notice small changes in their plants and understand how those changes may affect the plant's overall health.
• Plant Identification the ability to identify plants by their scientific names
• Harvesting knowing how to identify when a plant is ready for harvest, understanding the proper methods of harvesting each type of crop and ensuring that harvested produce is properly stored.
• Irrigation the process of supplying water to plants. Horticulturists use irrigation to keep their crops healthy and growing properly.
• Landscape Design the process of creating outdoor spaces, such as gardens and parks. Horticulturists often use their landscape design skills to create attractive outdoor areas for clients or employers.
• Seed germination ability to germinate seeds is an important skill. This involves preparing the soil, planting the seed and maintaining proper moisture levels so that the plant can grow.
• Observation Skills if a plant isn't growing as expected, you might be able to identify what's causing it so you can take action. Similarly, observing your surroundings can help you notice when environmental conditions need to change.
• Pest & Disease Control to protect their crops from harmful insects or diseases that could reduce their yield or damage their plants.
• Soil Analysis the process of testing soil to determine its nutrient levels and other qualities.

• Flexibility the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
• Pruning the process of removing dead or diseased plant parts to improve a plant's health.
• Fertilization the process of adding nutrients to soil to improve its quality.

Abilities:

• Communication oral expression, speech clarity, speech recognition, written comprehension, and written expression perform a wide variety of landscaping work.
• Operate hand and power tools and equipment required in general landscaping work.
• Perform heavy manual labour and lift up to 50 pounds.
• Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
• Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with the public and those contacted in the course of work.
• Work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
• Accommodate outside work in extreme weather conditions.

Duties:

• Approve the use of herbicides, silvicides and insecticides for use in the greenhouse, nursery, or forest
• A Issue environmental field reports
• Work in remote locations in all weather conditions
• Process horticultural specimens and samples

- assess forests and bush for rehabilitation and data gathering

• Oversee sample management
• Ensure accuracy in data breeding and yield records
• Use computer modelling to analyse data and predict longevity or yield outcomes
• Collaborate with other industry professionals to contribute information to longterm management plans and reporting procedures
• Communicate with clients, government departments, and the public
• Oversee replantation actions
• Oversee quality and safety controls for all biomass handling processes including green housing infrastructure, storage, transportation procedures, and inspection, planting, watering, etc.
• Have working knowledge of all species and their impact on local ecology
