Main Purpose:

The main purpose of this position/job is:

The Database and related Applications Server Administrator work part of team that support the Database and Application Server Administration environment in the provision of highly available and secure ICT services to the University.

This includes the design, install, configuration, administration and maintenance Databases, related Application Servers and related systems using best practice. Investigation and proposal of related solutions when required. Conduct all other reasonable work assigned by management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform administration and system operational tasks.
  • Monitoring and review database performance.
  • Capture and record relevant required information required for effective documentation.
  • Identify, diagnose and resolve technical problems.
  • Monitor resource usage and contribute to system performance management.
  • Manage backup and restore process.
  • Contribute to development and implementation of preventative measures to maximize system availability.
  • Ensure statistical data is collected on infrastructure services for measure against Service Level Agreements.
  • Perform stand by duty.
  • Assist with determining configurations and protocol standards.
  • Ensure effective and consistent communication with staff and suppliers.
  • Develop utility software that meet requirements
  • Develop procedures and documentation to operationalize work
  • Develop procedures and documentation to automate tasks.
  • Use best practice in service provision.
  • Use industry standards e.g. COBIT and ITIL
  • Expand current knowledge by keeping update with technology developments.
  • Document process and tasks.
  • Maintain system documentation.
  • Implement policies and procedure.
  • Adhere to change control process.
  • Contribute to continuous service improvement.
  • Comply with all University rules and regulations.
  • Completion of time sheets.
  • Completion of reports.

Requirements:

  • Matric
  • Diploma (Information technology), or BSc (Computer Science), or BCom (Information systems) or relevant Information Technology diploma/degree
  • Appropriate experience in Information Communication Technology environment
  • Certified Database Administrator

Preferences:

  • BSc (Computer Science), BCom (Information systems) or relevant Information Technology degree
  • Certifications for Database Administration
  • Appropriate experience in Information Communication Technology environment
