The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level.

Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

This position exists in UNEP Pretoria Office.

The Internship is for 6 months and UNPAID.

Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Support project management, including backstopping implementation of project activities and monitoring for the work undertaken by UNEP in the SADC region.
  • Assist with the organisation of meetings and outreach events, and highlevel Forums; (Workshops, Webinars, Retreats, etc.) and World Environment Day (WED) commemorations, for Environmental Sustainability by preparing meeting agendas, summaries, minutes and follow up communications as required
  • Support Advocacy Campaigns (Education/Awareness/Sensitizations/Trainings) geared to elevate environmental issues to the same level/s as social and economic issues in each of the 16 SADC Member States.
  • Developing necessary background materials, sourcing appropriate speakers, and report writing
  • Assist in preparing concept notes and short briefings across UNEP's programmatic areas
  • Assist in the development of communication and outreach materials such as stories, social media posts and newsletters highlighting the work and results of UNEP South Africa Office;
  • Undertake any additional duties and responsibilities that may be assigned by the Head of
UNEP South Africa office, and in accordance with the Interns' interests and experience.

Education
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Studies in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Policy, Environmental Engineering, Natural Resource Management, International Relations or any other relevant field.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For internship fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
