Head of Engineering
The roots of Irvin & Johnson Limited (I&J) are steeped in the history of South Africa's trawling industry.

From its modest beginnings, Irvin & Johnson has established itself as a leading fishing company, primary and secondary processor and marketer of an extensive range of branded and non-branded frozen and chilled convenience foods, sold on both the local South African market and across a wide range of international markets.

As such, the I&J brand commands significant respect and credential at household, corporate and international levels.


Part of the AVI Limited group of companies and based in Cape Town, I&J is a vertically integrated business, comprising of two primary business units - Fishing and Aquaculture.

The Fishing business unit comprises 10 sea-going vessels and a shore-based operations and maintenance capability.

Availability and continuity of the fleet, underpin the I&J value chain of production, conversion, marketing and selling of its predominantly Cake Hake products both domestically and abroad.

The production environment comprises of two factories and a cold storage facility, all located in Cape Town. c. 1,300 staff support the land and sea-based operations.


The Aquaculture business unit is located at Danger Point, near Gansbaai, where it farms Abalone (_Haleotis Midae_) in a pump-ashore, tank based facility.

Similarly, this business is a vertically integrated process, from nursery, grow-on, harvest, production and distribution of I&J Cape Abalone product for customers, largely based in Asia.

It employs c.150 staff, at the Danger Point farming and production facility.


I&J has a proud heritage, a strong brand, underpinned by a professional work environment and ethic, producing high quality, well regarded product sold in to both the foodservice and retail channels in South Africa and internationally.


Role Description:

Reporting to the Managing Director, the scope of this role will include both Fishing and Aquaculture and will include:

  • Provision of engineering oversight, governance, risk management and quality assurance to all of the major engineering systems and processes.
  • Working together with the business unit site management and engineering teams to understand and ensure appropriate engineering discipline and control is applied.
  • Understanding, reviewing and updating OEM Service Level Agreements, ensuring appropriate service provision, quality assurance and commercial tension is applied.
  • Providing technical oversight and assistance to I&J engineering management and staff, where appropriate deploying best practice tools and techniques to assist in the provision of proactive engineering best practices.
  • Ensuring the provision of best practice assetcare principles, systems and processes for I&J's operational assets.
  • Delivering the above to all of the major I&J systems and processes, including refrigeration reticulation, electrical reticulation, water reticulation, mechanical and electrical systems underpinning core machinery across the I&J business units.

Key Performance Areas:

The key performance objectives of this role will include:

  • Engaging with I&J executives, engineering managers to understand key engineering systems and processes. This is a hands-on role, demanding intimate knowledge of I&J's operating equipment, systems and processes.
  • Assist in developing strategies to optimize plant performance, minimize downtime, and maximize efficiency and output.
  • Perform engineering risk and safety assessments on key equipment and processes to identify critical engineering risk of failures and/or disruption.
  • Work crossfunctionally with other departments to ensure that engineering designs meet applicable product quality, safety, environmental, legal and regulatory standards.
  • Conduct regular inspections of facilities, plant and equipment to identify issues and opportunities for improvement.
  • Develop and implement best practice improvement initiatives to maintain and improve the plant's engineering performance.
  • Ensure prudent management of engineering spend against Capex and Opex budgets.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelors or Masters' degree in Electrical or Mechanical engineering.
  • GCC
  • 15 years' experience in a senior engineering management role in either of a mining, manufacturing, chemical, or processing environment.
  • Strong experience in refrigeration, electrical systems, heating, processing, flow, risk and safety engineering.
  • Excellent leadership and management skills, with experience in leading and developing teams.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong analytical skills to evaluate, troubleshoot, and refine engineering processes.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) with the ability to communicate effectively across multiple levels of the organization.
