In delivering 'social science that makes a difference', the Research Programmes of the Human Sciences Research Council initiate and undertake policy-oriented research projects and programmes from its offices in Cape Town, Durban, Pietermaritzburg, and Pretoria.

Its public-purpose mandate is set out in the Human Sciences Research Council Act of 2008.


The Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators (CeSTII) is a specialist research centre within the Human Sciences Research Council that is dedicated to producing policy-relevant research and statistical analysis in the domain of science, technology and innovation, in the African context.

CeSTII has a vision to be a thought and practice leader, as well as an acknowledged site of excellence in its field, and aims to consolidate its position as a value-adding component of South Africa's national innovation system.

CeSTII includes specialists in the area of science, technology and innovation measurement and policy, as well as economic development and other social science disciplines.


Over the past few years, CeSTII has established expertise in training African counterparts to implement research and experimental development (R&D) surveys.

As part of an international consortium, funded under the Science Granting Councils Initiative (SGCI), CeSTII aims to support science granting councils in Africa to strengthen their capacity in data management and using R&D data as evidence to inform national policy.


IT SOLUTIONS ARCHITECT/AGILE COACH

(24-month contract - paid by deliverable)

Minimum Requirements:

  • An Honours and/or Master's degree in computer science, information systems, engineering and/or systems design;
  • Proven experience as an IT architect with a solid understanding of architectural principles and patterns;
  • Extensive experience, preferably in the public sector, in solution architect or equivalent roles;
  • Experience in working with and/or within government settings will be an advantage;
  • A track record of IT/digital work in African/international settings, with either public or private sector organisations would be highly advantageous;
  • Strong coaching and mentorship skills;
  • Proven team and/or line management experience;
  • Performanceoriented, deadlinedriven, and solution focussed;
  • Creative problemsolving abilities given known constraints;
  • Adaptive ability to navigate various organisational structures;
  • Strong knowledge of various organisational systems; and
Experience in cross-cultural professional communication would be of added value

Duties and Responsibilities:

Key responsibilities and deliverables will include:

  • Lead and structure workshops and coaching sessions for the project;
  • Cocreate customised digital transformation roadmaps with each science granting council;
  • Agile reporting as part of a multidisciplinary project coordination and support team;
  • Documentation of results to the CeSTII team;
  • Coaching African science granting councils on using a digital transformation toolkit to create their own customised digital transformation roadmaps;
  • Conduct workshops, training sessions, and knowledgesharing and capabilitybuilding initiatives to facilitate the development and operationalisation of the customised roadmaps;
  • Process enhancement to identify areas for process improvement to optimise development workflows, release cycles and quality assurance in an agile context;
  • Define and track key performance indicators related to agile adoption and architectural integrity, ensuring monitoring and adjustment.
