PURPOSE


To conduct operational bird and bat monitoring at the wind facility, which includes monitoring, fatality searches, searcher efficiency trials, and carcass persistence trials while adhering to standardized protocols.

Will also include the implementation of required Shut Down on Demand (SDOD) protocols, where applicable.

The role is also to play a role in the project's Shut Down on Demand (SDOD) Programme if required, including conducting visual surveys of bird flight activity and advising/alerting the control room when specific bird species approach too close to wind turbines in accordance with a specific protocol.

This position will require working in shifts that could result in working over the weekend when required. The role will also assist with the broader environmental monitoring scope of work where required. The positions is based at Excelsior Wind Farm in the Western Cape. Preference will be given to residents residing in Riversonderend, Western Cape.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts bird and bat monitoring, including vantage point observations for extended periods of time (up to 40 hours per week) to record behavior and flight patterns. Working shifts, and thus some work will take place over weekends.
  • Collection of precise, accurate, and thorough data and collation for reporting.
  • Conducts visual surveys of bird flight activity and advice / alert a control room when specific bird species approach too close to wind turbines. This requires accuracy, focus, and a high degree of personal responsibility.
  • Conducts surveys on foot (up to 10 km per day) in potentially adverse weather conditions.
  • Searches for dead or injured birds and bats on foot in and amongst vegetation under wind turbines, near masts, and along powerlines.
  • Operates a camera and Global Positioning System (GPS) and records details of carcasses found, and observations made.
  • To undertake other environmental services such as alien vegetation clearing and fauna/ flora monitoring activities (when and where required).

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Have Matric Certificate or NQF equivalent.
  • Have an interest to study / already started / completed a Diploma in Nature Conservation or similar will be an advantage.
  • Have a firefighting and first aid certificate will be an added advantage.
  • Be able to work independently and with others, and interact positively with project management and landowners.
  • Be able to operate a camera and Global Positioning System.
  • Be a good communicator, have the ability to maintain a positive attitude, and to accept guidance.
  • Be able to read, write, and speak English fluently (other languages will be an advantage).
  • Be able to work with electronic data collection protocols and data submission timing requirements.
  • Be able to identify local bird and/or bat species.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office packages.
