Role purpose:


The purpose of this role is to drive the execution of Vodacom's agenda on human rights across Vodacom and its subsidiaries ('Vodacom') and provide expert advice at senior levels (Group and subsidiaries) on human rights within the telecommunications sector.


It involves leading engagement with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders so as to advance the human rights agenda within Vodacom, manage Group projects, lead the reporting relative to the portfolio, and drive partnerships and stakeholder engagement on the topic externally.

The role sits within Vodacom Group's ESG and Sustainable Business team, within Vodacom Group External Affairs.

The team is responsible for creating and implementing Vodacom's ESG strategy in support of the Group's purpose ambition, as well as the Group's commitment to responsible business practices.


Execution includes working with the Vodafone senior manager:
human rights and partners at local and regional level to drive Vodacom's human rights agenda forward.

Your responsibilities will include:


Accountability for delivering Vodacom's human rights agenda (including the consistent implementation and execution of policies, procedures, incident management and reporting), across Vodacom's subsidiaries and lines of business (including product and services, labour, diversity and inclusion, legal, health and safety, consumer, enterprise, procurement and security).

This is within the context of the Vodacom system of advantage strategy and ambitions.

Accountability for reviewing and adapting Vodacom's human rights approach as required by internal developments; the ongoing evolution of the external human rights landscape; and considering the findings of various external assessments including, Vodacom commissioned independent assessments; unsolicited civil society/NGO reports and ESG ratings.

Provide specialist guidance and strategic advice to Vodacom leadership (up to Board-level) on human rights; support markets and business lines in the assessment of human rights risks providing recommendations; and the impact of requests by government and non-governmental entities.

Develop a Vodacom narrative on human rights (localising the Vodafone narrative to the African context), manage Vodacom external leadership opportunities, and contribute to Vodafone external leadership opportunities.

Develop and manage external relationships with NGOs, industry, regulators and reporting bodies (such as the African Regional Forum on Business and Human Rights); and lead the process on external reporting of human rights in line with evolving regulatory context and stakeholder expectations.

Relevant degree or equivalent is essential
Minimum of 8-10 years relevant experience
Relevant degree would be advantageous.
Proven human rights experience including policy development and execution.

Experience in undertaking human rights due diligence using standards such as UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises would be advantageous.

Experience working in a matrixed, multi-national, pan-African organisation is advantageous.
Ability to communicate in French, Portuguese and other African languages would be advantageous.

Core competencies, knowledge and experience:

Experience in the development and execution of human rights strategies (corporate and telecommunications sector experience would be beneficial).
Experience in policy development and execution and human rights reporting.
Excellent verbal and written communicator who can engage and influence a wide range of senior internal and external stakeholders.
Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills, including managing and influencing and stakeholders (internally and externally).
