About this role

  • As an Associate: Environmental Management, you will work in the development lifecycle of various projects, from site origination, inception and pre-feasibility stages, through to permitting, bidding, and where applicable up to financial close (FC) and/or construction commencement.
  • You will work in the Environmental team within the Project Development department.
  • You will be a mentor and provide guidance to one or two analysts in the Environmental Team as /when applicable.
  • For allocated projects, you will take the lead on applications for and/or maintaining/updating (where applicable) the various required environmental permits/ licences/ authorisations/ approvals etc., such that may be needed by a particular project/s for a certain end goal (e.g. bidding, project sale, external DD, FC, etc.).
  • While most work will relate to environmental items, you may also be required to assist occasionally in obtaining certain technical and land permits.

Duties and responsibilities

Environmental

  • Environmental Authorisations (EA) and EA amendments- Compile request for quotes (RFQs); compare quotes; appointment service providers; and liaise with EAPs and/or specialists.
  • Water use applications (WUL and/ or GA as required).
  • Updates and approvals of EMPr and Final Layout approval processes.
  • Mangement of specialists and logistical arrangements for Pre-construction avifaunal and/or bat monitoring, including bat equipment orders, and register.
  • Obtaining biodiversity permits, including plant/tree removal permits.
  • Water use and/or Waste service provision, confirmation letters from Municipalities.
  • Managment of Heritage specialists and oversee relvant heritage mitigation permit applications, SAHRA permits etc.
  • Be the Environmental Lead on certain allocated projects, liasing with the Project Developer to obtain environmental permits and authorisations timeously.


Other / Technical / Land

  • Assist with approvals from SKA, S29 telecoms (e.g. Telkom/Sentech/MTN/Vodacom etc.)
  • Liaising with the respective statutory organisations and relevant stakeholders.
  • Environmental Lead on allocated projects for preparation and compilation of bids and tenders.
  • Project administration and record keeping.
  • Occasional travel to prospective sites may be required.
  • Lead engagement and follow ups with local and district municipalities, as well as municipal planning tribunals, regarding permitting applications where applicable.

Minimum Required skills and education background.


  • Tertiary Degree in relevant field (Science, environmental, town planning, project management, project development).
  • Experience and Knowledge of the South African renewable energy industry (particularly large-scale wind and solar).
  • 3 years minimum relevant experience in a similar role.
  • Possession of a valid, South Africa Code 08 driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of Environmental Law
  • Strong administrative skills.
  • Proven ability to work within a project development team and across business units.
  • Proven ability to solve problems creatively.


Desirable and/or Preferred skills and education background

  • Project development and land and/or environmental experience within the renewable energy sector or in other industries facing similar challenges, such as infrastructure and construction.
  • Training/certificates in environmental law and/or project management.
  • The ideal candidate would have a passion for the Renewable Energy sector and personality traits would include a high level of diligence, determination, resilience, and agility.

Additional Information

Able to work overtime according to operational needs.

The position is based at the offices of the company, but travel may be required occasionally.
