Job Profile Summary

ERM is looking for a motivated, hands-on Site Investigations & Risk Assessments​ Environmental Senior Consultant to join our growing Liability Portfolio Management and Remediation team in Johannesburg. Working under the direction of program managers and partners, the successful candidate will work on interesting site investigation and remediation projects throughout South Africa and into Africa, leading and managing fieldwork, especially intrusive works and other remediation projects. This is a great opportunity to work with ERM’s technical experts to implement the latest investigation and remediation technologies as well as more sustainable approaches to contaminated land management. The position will require a strong technical background, preferably with a good knowledge of the local oil and gas industry, excellent fieldwork and report writing skills and a sound understanding of the assessment methodologies used in contaminated land investigations.

Job Responsibilities

To focus on the technical delivery of existing and future oil and gas industry projects with a strong focus on report writing.

Manage tasks involving site investigation and remediation of soil, groundwater, sediments, and free-phase product for clients with complex technical/regulatory issues in the oil and gas and other manufacturing sectors.

Plan and oversee field work, including sampling, drilling, well installation, soil, groundwater and free-phase product assessment, vapor intrusion assessment, remedial pilot tests, and remedial system construction oversight.

Design and negotiate remedial solutions for contaminated soil and groundwater, using innovative and emerging remedial treatment technologies as well as traditional systems.

Manage Phase I and II environmental site assessments, including broad-based risk assessments and remediation.

Ensure compliance with all regulations. Adhere to and ensure team and subcontractor compliance with all ERM and client health and safety (H&S) and governance requirements.

Manage multiple projects within client’s scope/budget/schedule expectations and ensure quality standards on project deliverables.

Appropriately delegate project assignments to project team members and mentor junior staff.

Prepare technical proposals and participate in business development with existing clients and identified leads. Maintain client relationships that generate repeat business.

Build strong collaborative relationships with ERM employees, clients, and subcontractors.

Job Requirements

Bachelors or Master's degree in Engineering, Geology, Environmental Science, or related discipline with Honours (Masters preferred).

At least 5 years of experience in the industry.

Technical experience for complex site investigation/remediation projects.

Excellent written/verbal communication and technical/analytical skills.

Environmental field work experience.

Strong commitment to safety, including following established Health and Safety protocols.

Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse, integrated team.

Valid driver’s license and a good driving record.

Ability to multi-task, maintain flexibility, travel, and work independently with minimal supervision.
