About the Role
Our client, a reputable transport company operating out of Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, is seeking a skilled and experienced Commercial Vehicle Mechanic. This role is hands-on and requires a deep understanding of diesel engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems specific to heavy-duty trucks and commercial vehicles. You will be responsible for performing diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs to ensure our fleet remains in optimal condition, minimizing downtime and ensuring the safety of our drivers and the public. We are looking for a reliable and meticulous mechanic who is passionate about keeping our vehicles running smoothly and efficiently. Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues in commercial trucks and trailers.
- Perform routine preventative maintenance and scheduled servicing on all fleet vehicles.
- Conduct thorough inspections of vehicles to identify potential problems and recommend necessary repairs.
- Maintain accurate records of all maintenance and repair work performed, including parts used and labor hours.
- Ensure all work is completed efficiently, safely, and to industry standards.
- Utilize diagnostic equipment and specialized tools effectively to pinpoint and resolve complex issues.
- Manage inventory of spare parts and workshop supplies, ensuring availability for repairs.
- Adhere to all workshop safety regulations and maintain a clean and organized work environment.
- Stay up-to-date with the latest technologies and repair techniques for commercial vehicles.
- Assist in training junior mechanics or apprentices as needed.
Requirements
- Qualified Diesel Mechanic with trade test certification (e.g., NQF Level 3/4).
- Minimum of 6 years of experience as a mechanic specializing in commercial vehicles (trucks, buses, heavy machinery).
- Strong diagnostic skills and proficiency with electronic diagnostic tools.
- In-depth knowledge of diesel engines, transmissions, braking systems, and suspension.
- Familiarity with various makes and models of commercial vehicles.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and repair guides.
- Valid driver's license (Code 10 preferred) and a clean driving record.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a workshop environment.
- Must be physically fit and capable of performing manual labor.
