About the Opportunity
Our client is an established South African manufacturing business operating within the branded apparel, printing and customisation sector.
They are looking to appoint an experienced DTP Technician to join their Print Department in Durban.
This is a hands-on, technically focused role responsible for managing the critical processes between the creation of a print layout and final production. The successful candidate will prepare and check digital artwork, manage colour accuracy, create proofs, set up print jobs and ensure files and materials are completely production-ready before going to press.
The DTP Technician acts as an important final quality-control checkpoint, working closely with designers, coordinators and print operators to identify potential problems before they reach production.
This opportunity is ideally suited to someone who combines strong DTP/prepress expertise with excellent technical problem-solving ability, exceptional attention to detail and a solid understanding of commercial print production.
About the Role
The DTP Technician is responsible for ensuring that artwork supplied by clients or designers can be produced accurately and efficiently within the printing environment.
You will evaluate and prepare digital files, perform preflight checks, manage colour profiles, produce proofs, set up machinery for different print jobs and monitor print production to ensure the required quality standards are maintained.
You will also troubleshoot technical problems involving artwork, software and equipment that could negatively affect print quality or cause production delays.
This is a fast-paced production environment where multiple jobs and tight deadlines need to be managed simultaneously. Success therefore requires someone who is technically competent, meticulous, highly organised and comfortable taking ownership of their work.
Duties & Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
File Preparation & Artwork
- Evaluate digital files received from clients and designers.
- Prepare artwork and digital files for commercial printing.
- Ensure all files are correctly formatted and fully print-ready before production.
- Check image resolution and overall image quality.
- Confirm that colour modes are appropriate for the required printing process, including CMYK.
- Check fonts and font integrity.
- Verify layouts, alignment and positioning.
- Ensure supplied artwork meets the technical requirements of the intended print process.
- Identify artwork or file issues before jobs are released into production.
Preflight & Quality Control
- Perform comprehensive preflight checks on artwork before printing.
- Identify potential production problems including:
- Missing fonts.
- Low-resolution images.
- Incorrect colour modes.
- Alignment issues.
- File-format problems.
- Layout inconsistencies.
- Correct issues where possible or communicate required changes to the relevant designer or coordinator.
- Act as the final technical quality-control checkpoint before artwork goes to press.
- Ensure completed files meet the required production and quality standards.
Colour Management
- Manage colour profiles throughout the prepress and printing process.
- Assist with calibration to achieve accurate and consistent colour reproduction.
- Ensure colours remain consistent from approved proof through to final printed output.
- Identify potential colour discrepancies before final production.
- Work closely with relevant production personnel to resolve colour-related issues.
- Maintain a strong focus on colour accuracy and consistency throughout the production process.
Proofing
- Create digital and/or physical proofs before final production.
- Prepare proofs for review and approval by coordinators.
- Ensure proofs accurately represent the intended final output.
- Identify potential artwork or production issues during the proofing stage.
- Implement approved corrections before releasing jobs for final production.
Print Setup & Production Support
- Assist with setting up machinery for different print jobs.
- Ensure files, artwork and materials are correctly prepared before production begins.
- Monitor print jobs to ensure quality requirements are maintained.
- Work closely with print operators throughout the production process.
- Provide technical support where artwork or file-related issues arise.
- Help ensure an efficient handover between prepress and final production.
Troubleshooting
- Identify and resolve technical problems that could negatively affect print quality.
- Troubleshoot issues involving:
- Digital artwork.
- File formats.
- Design and prepress software.
- Colour profiles.
- Prepress workflow.
- Print equipment.
- Respond quickly to technical issues to minimise production delays.
- Escalate more complex technical or equipment problems where necessary.
- Work proactively to prevent recurring production issues.
Equipment & Basic Maintenance
- Perform routine cleaning of relevant prepress and print equipment.
- Carry out basic equipment maintenance where appropriate.
- Assist in maintaining software and production tools used within the department.
- Identify equipment-related concerns and report them promptly.
- Contribute towards maintaining an organised and efficient working environment.
Communication & Collaboration
- Work closely with graphic designers, coordinators and print operators.
- Communicate job specifications clearly and accurately.
- Provide constructive technical feedback regarding supplied artwork.
- Clarify artwork or production requirements where necessary.
- Communicate technical concerns that could affect quality or delivery.
- Work collaboratively with the wider production team to ensure deadlines are achieved.

Desired Experience & Qualification
Minimum Requirements
- Matric / NQF Level 4 or equivalent.
- Previous experience within a DTP, prepress or print production environment.
- Strong working knowledge of commercial print preparation and production processes.
- Expertise in industry-standard design software, particularly:
- Adobe InDesign
- Adobe Photoshop
- Adobe Illustrator
- Strong understanding of digital file preparation.
- Good knowledge of common print file formats including:
- TIFF
- EPS
- Strong understanding of colour management.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Strong technical troubleshooting and problem-solving ability.
- Ability to manage multiple jobs and meet demanding production deadlines.
Highly Advantageous
- Vocational training or a diploma in Graphic Design, Printing Technology or a related discipline.
- Experience using specialised RIP / prepress workflow software.
- Experience with software such as:
- FlexiSign
- Caldera
- Wasatch
- Or similar RIP/prepress systems.
- Previous experience within a busy commercial print or branding production environment.
- Experience setting up print equipment for different production jobs.
- Practical knowledge of colour calibration and colour-profile management.

Working Environment
This role operates within a busy, deadline-driven print production environment where quality, speed and accuracy are equally important.
The DTP Technician works at the intersection of design and production, ensuring creative artwork can be translated accurately into a commercially produced finished product.
The successful candidate must therefore be comfortable managing multiple print jobs simultaneously, identifying technical problems quickly and working closely with different stakeholders to keep production moving.
Due to operational requirements, the successful candidate may occasionally be required to work shifts and overtime.
Package & Remuneration
