Introduction

General Heavy Machinery is a leading provider of heavy machinery solutions within the mining sector. We specialise in the operation, maintenance, and optimisation of high-performance equipment used in demanding environments. As part of our commitment to operational excellence, safety, and technical efficiency, we are seeking an experienced and technically strong Operations Controller.

This role is critical in ensuring seamless daily operations, equipment readiness, compliance with safety standards, and the effective coordination of resources within our mining and heavy machinery operations.

Duties & Responsibilities

Operational Coordination

  • Oversee and control daily operational activities across the different sites.

  • Coordinate task allocations and equipment/ parts deployment to ensure production targets are met.

  • Monitor equipment/parts utilisation, performance, and operational KPIs.

  • Communicate operational updates, changes, and priorities to supervisors and operational teams.

Technical & Equipment Management

  • Conduct technical evaluations on heavy equipment performance and identify improvement areas.

  • Work closely with technicians to manage servicing schedules, breakdown repairs, and component replacements.

  • Analyse equipment diagnostics, telematics, and machine data to reduce downtime and prevent failures.

  • Ensure machinery is operated in line with OEM specifications and GHMachinery standards.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with the Mine Health & Safety Act and internal GH Machinery safety policies.

  • Identify risks and implement corrective or preventive measures.

  • Assist with incident investigations, safety audits, and operational risk assessments.

  • Promote safe working practices and enforce adherence to SOPs.

Reporting & Documentation

  • Compile daily, weekly, and monthly reports on production, downtime, incidents, fleet utilisation, and fuel usage.

  • Maintain updated records of machine hours, maintenance logs, technical, and operational data.

  • Use internal operational systems to capture and analyse operational metrics.

Team & Stakeholder Coordination

  • Liaise with technicians to ensure workflow continuity.

  • Support department and technicians on technical procedures, safe operation, and equipment care.

  • Participate in planning sessions to assist management with resource allocation, budgeting, and operational optimisation initiatives.

Desired Experience & Qualification

  • Minimum 5 years' experience in operations control, mining operations, fleet coordination, or heavy machinery environments.

  • Strong technical background with hands-on experience working with mining and heavy machinery such as excavators, dump trucks, shovels, loaders, and crushers.

  • Experience with fleet management systems, telematics platforms, or diagnostic tools.

  • Proven ability to analyse technical data, evaluate equipment performance, and support maintenance processes.

  • Strong understanding of production cycles, machine utilisation, and operational risk.

  • Safety certifications or machinery-related technical training (beneficial).

  • Valid driver's licence

  • Qualification in Operations Management, Mechanical Engineering, Mining Engineering, or a related field (advantageous).
