Salary Expectations: ZAR 5 000,00 – ZAR 10, monthly earnings (inclusive of incentive or commission structures and travel or transport allowances)

This role is designed for field-based staff who primarily operate within defined local areas. Preference will be given to candidates who reside within or near the assigned operational zones, as the role involves daily movement on foot between outlets and benefits from local area familiarity. Applicants should be comfortable working mainly within a defined area, with travel requirements varying depending on project needs.

About the Role

InTrade Africa is recruiting Field Enumerators to support large-scale, on-the-ground data collection across formal and informal trade environments.

This is a fully field-based role requiring daily walking through assigned zones, engaging directly with outlet owners and staff, and capturing accurate, real-time data using a mobile phone application. Enumerators are the first point of contact between the project and the community and play a critical role in building a verified view of the trade landscape.

This role is best suited to individuals who are people-confident, disciplined, patient, and comfortable working in busy real-world environments. Extensive training will be provided [Training to commence on January 5th].

What We're Looking For

Applicants must demonstrate the following capabilities:

Strong communication and people skills

  • Confident approaching shop owners, cashiers, and staff
  • Comfortable asking direct questions clearly and respectfully

Comfortable working in busy or crowded environments

  • Includes tuck shops, spaza shops, informal outlets, taverns, and high foot-traffic areas

Ability to follow detailed questionnaires accurately

  • Able to read, understand, and complete step-by-step surveys
  • Must not rush, skip sections, or guess answers

Patience and professionalism

  • Willing to wait for staff to finish serving customers before engaging
  • Able to work calmly during peak periods and school holidays

High level of integrity and accountability

  • Must stick to assigned routes and daily targets
  • Expected to report challenges, refusals, or deviations honestly

Confidence handling rejection or difficult interactions

  • Able to remain calm, respectful, and composed
  • Not easily intimidated by refusals or pushback

Strong time management and self-discipline

  • Able to work independently in the field
  • Manages daily movement between multiple outlets effectively
  • Is NOT prone to absenteeism

Relevant experience (advantageous)

  • Previous experience in fieldwork, customer service, sales, promotions, or surveys is an advantage

Physically mobile and adaptable

  • Comfortable walking long distances daily
  • Able to adjust to different working conditions and environments

Key Responsibilities

  • Walk assigned areas to identify and engage retail and informal trade outlets
  • Capture accurate outlet data using the InTrade Mobile App
  • Take clear outlet photographs and ensure GPS accuracy
  • Explain the purpose of the project professionally to outlet staff
  • Submit complete, accurate forms daily with no duplication
  • Report safety concerns, refusals, or access issues to the Supervisor

Important to Note

  • This is not a desk job
  • Expect early starts, long walks, and varied weather conditions
  • Professional conduct in the field is mandatory
  • Performance is actively monitored through quality checks and GPS validation

Minimum Requirements

  • South African ID or valid work permit
  • Matric (preferred)
  • Smartphone literacy
  • Fluent in local language + basic English
  • Comfortable working on foot for extended periods

This role is best suited to candidates who already have real-world exposure to customer-facing or field-based work. We actively encourage applications from individuals with backgrounds such as:

  • Field Enumerators or Surveyors (previous research, audits, or census-style work)
  • Promoters or Brand Ambassadors working in retail or informal trade environments
  • Sales Representatives (especially FMCG, informal trade, or door-to-door sales)
  • Customer Service Staff from high-volume retail, call-outs, or frontline roles
  • Community Field Workers or Outreach Staff

Youth with informal trade exposure, including those who have worked in or around:

  • Spaza shops
  • Tuck shops
  • Taverns / Shebeens
  • Street vendors or market stalls
  • Graduates or students seeking practical, field-based experience in data collection, market research, or operations
