Overview

The Associate Director (AD) plays a critical role within the Water Advisory Group (AG) management team, driving performance, growth, and a positive culture. This position provides strategic, operational, client, and people leadership, supporting the delivery of the AG's business plan and the broader organizational vision of designing a fairer, better, and greener world that benefits everyone.

This role is performed alongside the incumbent's core professional responsibilities (e.g., Senior Engineer, Senior Project Manager, or Technical Specialist).

Key Responsibilities

1. Strategic Leadership

  • Contribute to the development and execution of the Advisory Group's strategic and operational plans.
  • Provide leadership in designated portfolio areas such as technical excellence, project management, or client engagement.
  • Support achievement of financial, order intake, and business improvement targets.
  • Champion positive change management across teams and promote collaboration across business units.

2. Internal Operations & Business Processes

  • Ensure governance, integrity management, and compliance with internal policies.
  • Oversee project delivery to ensure quality outcomes, profitability, and client satisfaction.
  • Review and approve proposals, ensuring adherence to internal authorisation frameworks.
  • Promote digital and data-driven project execution using collaboration and management tools.
  • Drive continuous improvement in business processes and operational discipline.

3. Clients & Markets

  • Support the development and execution of client and market strategies.
  • Strengthen client relationships and identify new business opportunities aligned with strategic objectives.
  • Represent the organisation in industry forums and strategic partnerships.
  • Oversee account management for key clients and ensure CRM data integrity.

4. People & Culture

  • Support workforce planning, recruitment, and talent development.
  • Lead and mentor team members, fostering a high-performing, inclusive culture.
  • Ensure regular performance reviews and career development initiatives.
  • Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, wellbeing, and strong internal communication across teams.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline (postgraduate qualification preferred).
  • Professional registration (PrEng / PrTech) essential; PMP / SACPCMP advantageous.
  • 12–15 years of post-graduate experience in consulting engineering.
  • Proven experience in leadership roles at strategic and operational levels.
  • Demonstrated success in project management, business development, client engagement, or technical leadership.
  • Strong people management, commercial, and financial acumen.
  • Exposure to digital tools such as BIM, ISO 19650, or Power BI advantageous.
  • Understanding of both public and private sector environments.
