We're looking for a hands-on leather worker who can operate industrial sewing machines, cut leather accurately, and confidently construct new products and prototypes. This is a practical, production-and-development role: you'll sew production runs, help refine assembly methods, and turn sketches or samples into finished pieces.

Key responsibilities

  • Operate industrial leather sewing machines for production and sample work.
  • Cut leather and composite materials to pattern, by hand and with cutting tools.
  • Assemble and construct finished items (stitching, gluing, edge finishing, basic hardware fitting).
  • Read and work from patterns, technical drawings or sample pieces; suggest practical improvements.
  • Produce accurate, neat seams and durable construction suitable for commercial use.
  • Help develop and refine prototypes and new product ideas; problem-solve fixture and assembly issues.
  • Keep work area, machines and tools clean and safe; report faults and assist with basic routine machine maintenance.
  • Meet quality and production targets while maintaining attention to detail.

Required skills and experience

  • Proven experience operating industrial sewing machines on leather or heavy fabrics.
  • Strong leather cutting skills and familiarity with hand and machine cutting tools.
  • Demonstrable ability to construct new items or prototypes (can translate a sample/sketch into a finished product).
  • Good hand-eye coordination, neat finishing, and an eye for durable construction.
  • Comfortable working with hand tools, adhesives, rivets, zippers and basic hardware.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Basic numeracy and ability to measure accurately.
  • South African work authorization; local candidates preferred.

Desirable but not essential

  • Formal training or apprenticeship in leatherwork, upholstery, saddlery, or industrial sewing.
  • Experience with pattern making, cutting tables or clicker press operation.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
