Duties & Responsibilities

Job Purpose:

The Junior Quantity Surveyor at Rihati Utility Services supports cost management across infrastructure and energy projects. Working under the supervision of senior quantity surveyors, the role focuses on ensuring cost-effective project delivery in line with South African standards, contributing to Rihati's sustainable and financially viable project portfolio.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare detailed Bills of Quantities (BoQ), covering materials, labour, and equipment costs.
  • Assist in cost estimation and budgeting for infrastructure and energy projects.
  • Provide support to the tendering and procurement departments.
  • Conduct site visits to measure progress and verify contractor claims.
  • Monitor project budgets and report on cost variances to senior surveyors.
  • Assist in negotiating and reviewing subcontractor and supplier agreements.
  • Maintain accurate cost documentation for audit and compliance purposes.
  • Contribute to value engineering and cost optimization in volatile market conditions.
  • Learn and utilize cost estimation software (e.g., WinQS) for efficient budgeting and forecasting.
  • Support lifecycle costing and cost forecasting for multi-year utility projects.
  • Review supplier and subcontractor invoices for compliance with contract terms.
  • Assist in identifying and assessing risks related to cost overruns or project delays.
  • Support procurement and cost management for renewable energy components.
  • Compile cost-related data for client and municipal reporting.
  • Collaborate with technical teams to ensure alignment between design specifications and cost plans.
  • Demonstrate understanding of construction contracts (JBCC, FIDIC, NEC3, and GCC).

Desired Experience & Qualification
  • Diploma or bachelor's degree in quantity surveying.
  • 1–3 years of relevant experience, preferably within MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and cost management software.
  • Working knowledge of standard construction contracts.
  • Strong analytical, numerical, and organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Good communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Valid Drivers License.
