The Senior Data Engineer in a consulting Managed Services context, plays a pivotal role in architecting, developing, and maintaining robust data solutions that empower clients to harness the full potential of their data. This role is responsible for designing scalable data pipelines, ensuring data quality, and providing continuous delivery of data-driven insights, all while fostering strong client relationships. The Senior Data Engineer acts as a trusted advisor, bridging the gap between complex business challenges and modern cloud, analytics, and data engineering capabilities.

Responsible for creating data pipelines that convert raw data into usable formats for data consumers to utilize. The role will involve collaborating with Business and IT stakeholders at all levels at the client to ensure that our data managed services initiatives add value to our clients.

Key Deliverables:

• Design, build, and optimize end-to-end data pipelines that meet client requirements for performance, reliability, and scalability.
• Implement and manage data integration, transformation, and storage solutions using best-in-class industry tools and cloud platforms.
• Develop and enforce data governance, data quality, and security standards aligned with industry and regulatory best practices.
• Collaborate with client stakeholders, business analysts, and data scientists to translate business and analytical requirements into technical solutions, including effective data visualisation.
• Develop and deliver interactive dashboards and reports using Power BI and related visualisation technologies to facilitate data-driven decision-making for clients.
• Provide ongoing operational support, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement of managed data services for multiple clients.
• Lead and mentor junior data engineers, establishing technical standards, best practices, and knowledge sharing within the team.
• Produce and maintain clear, concise technical documentation, including solution architectures, data flow diagrams, and operational runbooks.
• Ensure solutions are delivered on time, within scope, and to the highest standards of quality and security.
• Contribute to pre-sales and solutioning discussions with potential clients, offering thought leadership and technical expertise.

Academic Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Systems, Engineering, Mathematics, or related field (required)
• Relevant professional certifications, such as:
• Microsoft Azure Data Engineer Associate
• Databricks Certified Data Engineer
• Certified Power BI Data Analyst

Work Experience:

• Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in data engineering, data platform development and data visualization.
• Proven experience in a consulting or Managed Services environment, preferably serving multiple clients and sectors.
• Demonstrated track record in delivering complex data solutions, including data integration, warehousing, analytics, and data visualisation projects.
• Experience in designing and implementing cloud-based data architectures (AWS, Azure, GCP, etc.).
• Strong exposure to Agile and DevOps processes, with experience in CI/CD for data workloads.
• Experience managing client relationships.
• 5 years practical experience as a Data Engineer/ ETL Developer
• Experience in the following technologies –
• Data Factory
• Azure Synapse
• Azure SQL
• Power BI
• Databricks
• SQL
• Experience in developing and building data pipelines
• Experience in troubleshooting and debugging of data pipelines

Knowledge:

• Deep understanding of relational and non-relational database systems
• Proficiency in modern data pipeline frameworks and ETL/ELT processes (e.g. Apache Airflow, dbt, Informatica, Talend).
• Expertise with data modeling, data warehousing, and big data technologies (e.g. Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery, Databricks, Hadoop, Spark).
• Advanced knowledge of data visualisation principles, best practices, and tools, with a focus on Power BI and its ecosystem (DAX, Power Query, Power BI Service).
• Knowledge of cloud platforms.
• Understanding of data governance, data protection, and compliance requirements (GDPR, HIPAA, POPIA, etc.).
• Awareness of emerging trends and technologies in the data engineering and visualisation ecosystem.

Skills:

• Advanced proficiency in SQL and at least one modern programming language (Python, Scala, or Java).
• Design and implementation of robust, scalable data architectures on leading cloud platforms.
• End-to-end ETL/ELT pipeline development, optimization, and orchestration.
• Development of interactive data dashboards and visual analytics solutions using Power BI and adjacent technologies (including DAX, Power Query, Power BI Embedded, etc.).
• Data quality, validation, and monitoring frameworks.
• Version control and CI/CD tools (e.g. Git, Jenkins, Azure DevOps).
• Effective stakeholder management, with the ability to translate functional requirements into both technical and visual solutions.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
• Technical documentation and knowledge-sharing skills.
